Quick Look: Opera Widgets for Windows Mobile!
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Oct 22 2008 - 80 views
I wouldn’t exactly say that I’ve been a fan of browser widgets, on the PC or the mobile. Since I had a look at the NFB Widgets earlier.
I’m nothing though, if not consistent, so a better look at Opera’s new widgety offering is warranted.
One thing that is really neat, is the ability to create your own widgets from the desktop in a simple three step wizard [Widgetize].
I am going to concentrate on the initial mobile offering here, and not expand on the desktop version too much.
It’s quite surprising, and due to the limitations of the test device I’m using, I’ll reserve judgement and just show you what I can see without the whining about memory limitations.

Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta2, with Widgets
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Oct 21 2008 - 28 views
After we saw the new alpha and expose of Firefox Fennnec, previewed last week, we are privileged to get a new beta version of Opera’s browser to have a look at! Not to be out done of course, Opera have added widgets to the Beta. Whilst I have not fully tested this out yet, you can see by the screen shot, that the new Beta is having some rendering problems. Opera openly tell us about the reported problems/issues that are still to be fixed, and I’d go with that. There has been a flurry of HTC devices with the RAM to run this browser, so loading it on the Axim and having a look is not as sweet as most would think. Still getting the out of memory messages. It is a beta though. I am a demanding taskmaster, I’d like the dev’s to remember that there are a lot of us still using devices that don’t have the RAM capacity of the Diamond.
Back to the news, this new Opera beta is for WinMo, UIQ, and there is a SDK for S60 devices. It is all focused on touch screen devices. I haven’t really looked at the widgets yet, so I won’t offer an opinion on them, have a look at the press release, and see what you think!

Quick Look, NFB Widgets!

What’s a Widget? Is it like a thing-a-me-bob?
widg·et (w

t)
n.
1. A small mechanical device or control; a gadget.
2. An unnamed or hypothetical manufactured article.
[Perhaps alteration of gadget.]
When I posted about Access’s new addition to the Netfront family I didn’t think I’d be brought to my knees by a widget. We are all familiar with widgets with our desktop browsers, but the addition of dedicated widgets to a Windows Mobile browser seemed like a novelty. Well it’s not a novelty, and it’s not even funny. The base application installs on it’s own then you add widgets, like modules, to the base application. You can add weather, news, world time, whatever widgets are available now.

Quick Look: Yahoo Go 3
Posted by: dgoldring on Jul 02 2008 - 576 viewsThe dust has settled, and Yahoo is out to prove that it doesn’t need Microsoft, Google, or anyone else in order to maintain its Internet dominance…er…level of mediocrity. I mean, let’s face it, Yahoo just does not carry the same weight it once did. But that is not to say Yahoo does not still have any winners in its arsenal. In fact, the free Yahoo! Go has proven itself, in the past, to be an outstanding all-in-one Internet resource. This latest version sees some significant changes to the interface as well as some wild customization options. Let’s take a closer look.

Netfront Surprises…
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Jul 01 2008 - 174 viewsIf any of you have tried out the Netfront Browser from Access, you’ll know that they are at the fore front of mobile browser technology. So I’ve posted on the latest concept version more than once, but today there’s a new Beta that adds widgets to the Netfront Browser.
Most of us would be familiar with widgets with our desktop browser, and Access are introducing a mobile version that works with their mobile browser. Unexpected and surprising, but another step in the direction of adding desktop usability to the mobile environment.
This is a step in the right direction for handheld browsing, one of the things that most of us are looking for is more of a desktop experience on the handheld. Don’t hang around check this out and see if you like it.
