Magic Number for the HTC Incredible is 4-29

HTC Incredible

Drum roll please….  The HTC Incredible, known as the Droid Incredible, will be available on April 29.  Verizon had a webpage up earlier today stating that the ‘next chapter in the Droid saga starts on April 29′ with a picture of the Incredible.  However, the page is now password protected.  I would prefer the name, Incredible the Droid.  It makes be think of Alexander the Great or Jabba the Hut.  Although, George Lucas might want a cut of the profits.  Regardless, I am SUPER excited to finally have one of these babies in my hand.  Barring the phone not working or catching on fire, this will be my new handset in the next month or so.

Meet Kin, Microsoft’s New Phone Aimed at Social Networkers

Microsoft has long been rumored to have been working on another cell phone related project besides Windows Mobile 6.5 and Windows Phone 7.  Now we have confirmation of that in what is the Kin 1 and Kin 2, touch screen, qwerty enabled phones geared towards those that social networks also covet.  The phones, available in the US in late May or early June, will be available on the Verizon Wireless network.  Vodafone is planning a European release at a as of now undisclosed time.
This marks new ground with Microsoft having total control over the hardware (manufactured by Sharp) and the device software.  It also marks new ground with Microsoft injecting the mobile arena with three different platforms, when Windows Phone 7 and Windows Mobile 6.5.x are thrown into the mix.
Is this a smart decision?  Time will tell.  Microsoft may be planning on saturating the market and providing an option for almost every potential cell phone user.  We already have Windows Mobile, aimed at the business and techie crowds, Windows Phone 7, aimed at the media enthusiasts and social networkers of the world and now the Kin, aimed at catching everyone in the gaps.
Such a venture might be smart, or it may lead to consumer confusion. You be the judge.  What are your thoughts?

Is the iPhone Coming to Verizon?

iphone-vzw

To be honest…I have no idea.  Not long ago, Chris laid out some very persuasive arguments for why he thinks it is pretty dang unlikely that we will ever see an iPhone with a big red V on it.   Well, apparently, Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg did not read Chris’ article.  At a recent event, Seidenberg, for the first time, gave his views of the Verizon iPhone…bottom line, he wants one.  He feels his network could handle it, and he is, “open to getting the device.”  Of course, as Seidenberg went on to note, the final decision rests in the hands of Steve Jobs.  Yeah, the same Steve Jobs who is locked into an eternal death spiral with AT&T.  My opinion?  I think Verizon has a much more solid network for the iPhone than AT&T.  That being said, I will believe it when I see it.

HTC Incredible Ready to Take Flight at Verizon

If you believe all the hype, then the HTC Incredible could be hitting Verizon in a mere two weeks.  For a phone that has no official announcement, that’s a very quick release, possibly faster than a speeding bullet.  Please indulge me, no matter when I hear this phone mentioned, scenes from The Incredibles run through my head.  If I purchase this phone, as a belated birthday present for me, I think I might need to invest in a little spandex suit for it.  With its current list of powers:  1G Snapdragon processor, 8 megapixel camera, 512MB RAM, and its slim and trim body, it will be very hard to resist.  Plus, don’t forget all the Sense UI and Android goodness.

As much as I would like to see this phone as soon as possible, I bet it winds up being a summer release.  I’m thinking maybe June.

Sprint’s Fumble of the NFL Mobile App Leads to A Pick Six From Verizon

NFL RedZone Desktop Wallpaper

It was one of Sprint’s big coup’s.  They had exclusive access to the National Football League with their NFL mobile app, which comes preloaded on many of their handsets and mobile devices.  Until now.  From out of nowhere, Verizon made a bold offensive play (rumored to follow a tune of roughly $700 million), and locked mobile access to the NFL Network’s new  Red Zone channel.  This is the mobile companion to the NFL Network’s new Red Zone (www.redzonetv.nfl.com)

I have always been a pretty big fan of Sprint’s NFL mobile app, which brings live scoring updates and audio broadcasts, along with plenty of other features.  This all seems scant, however, when compared with the NFL Network’s Red Zone channel, which will feature:

  • live streaming of Sunday Night and Thursday Night games
  • full Fantasy Football stats
  • Live streaming of the 2010 NFL Draft
  • Video and analysis on demand

And, of course, pretty much everything Sprint offers with its NFL mobile app.   I have to say that I am impressed by some of the moves Verizon has been making lately.  They took AT&T head-on rather successfully with their “There’s a map for that” ads, and now they are aiming straight for the heart of Sprint’s mobile app package.

No word yet on pricing or availability, but I imagine that information will be coming soon, since Verizon plans to launch in time for the NFL Draft, which is coming up pretty quickly.
