Your Wifi Is Working Fine…and Other Tall Tales

Seems like Apple tried to pull the old Jedi mind trick on us all.  Steve Jobs stood on his stage and waved his hand in front of our eyes while muttering things like, “these are not the droids you’re looking for,” and “your new iPad’s Wifi works fine and does not drop the connection.”  Fortunately, most of us are not as weak minded as Jobs seems to think, and saw right through his mind control techniques.

So, he moved on to plan B, blame.  Apple blamed the user, they blamed the device, they blamed your Internet provider.  They blamed pretty much everyone except Apple…until now.  In a very unApple-like mea culpa, Apple has actually owned up to their own mistake.  They are now admitting that you may be experiencing some problems with the Wifi in some iPad models, which will be addressed in a future software update.

These Wifi problems seem to manifest as two distinct problems.  Sometimes, it behaves as though there is a weak signal, despite having a full four bars.  Other times, it will simply drop the signal, and lose track of the network, requiring you to reconnect or log back in.

I have to be honest.  When I first got my iPad, and connected it to my Sprint network, I noticed absolutely no problems.  Connected the Overdrive 3G/4G mobile broadband, and still no problems.  Then I hooked up Verizon Fios.  All of a sudden, things just went haywire.  My connection to the iPad would not hold, it kept dropping the password, just one problem after another.  None of my other computers or devices have problems with my Verizon FIOS modem, and my iPad has not had any other problems with any other modems I have connected.  So, if you needed any further proof that Verizon and Apple simply cannot get along, there you go.  Oh, that and the news of the confirmed five year exclusivity agreement between Apple and AT&T (which runs through 2012).  Sorry, Verizon fans.

To sum up…iPhone not coming to Verizon, Apple broke Wifi, but a fix may be coming soon.  And you heard it all at JAMM.

Let the Rumors Cease & Verizon Customers Cry ‘NO!’

Apple iPhone

There could be sobs heard throughout the Verizon family, as AT&T revealed that they signed a five year contract with Apple in 2007.  So, doing the math, that means that the iPhone will not be single until possibly 2012.  In my household, there was a roar of ‘We are switching to AT&T’.  My other half has lusted for an iPhone since they first debuted.  I have to agree that its a beautiful device, and definitely lust worthy.  Luckily for me, and my dreams of a HTC Incredible, my honey works for a company that has AT&T, so I think work will provide her with her dream.

How about everyone else?  Is this the last straw?  Will you switch to AT&T?

I’m happy with my Verizon service, and since they finally have some nice phones, I’m staying.

Verizon No Longer Getting the Nexus One

Attention Verizon users who have been drooling over the Nexus One, anticipating it’s arrival on your network.  Roll up the tongues, wipe the corners of your mouth.  It’s not coming.  According to Google, you will want to check out HTC’s Droid Incredible, now available for preorder and available in stores April 29th.

What’s to be taken from this?  I for one am not sure, as I never really understood the business model behind the Nexus One.  Google was themselves selling the phone, via the service provider.  Isn’t that kind of how it works for every other company in the cell phone game, anyways?!  Maybe this means that while we can classify Android a success, the Nexus One would fall into the flop category?  Perhaps your thoughts on Google’s business model are more clear than mine.  Hit the comments and enlighten me.

Magic Number for the HTC Incredible is 4-29

HTC Incredible

Drum roll please….  The HTC Incredible, known as the Droid Incredible, will be available on April 29.  Verizon had a webpage up earlier today stating that the ‘next chapter in the Droid saga starts on April 29′ with a picture of the Incredible.  However, the page is now password protected.  I would prefer the name, Incredible the Droid.  It makes be think of Alexander the Great or Jabba the Hut.  Although, George Lucas might want a cut of the profits.  Regardless, I am SUPER excited to finally have one of these babies in my hand.  Barring the phone not working or catching on fire, this will be my new handset in the next month or so.

Meet Kin, Microsoft’s New Phone Aimed at Social Networkers

Microsoft has long been rumored to have been working on another cell phone related project besides Windows Mobile 6.5 and Windows Phone 7.  Now we have confirmation of that in what is the Kin 1 and Kin 2, touch screen, qwerty enabled phones geared towards those that social networks also covet.  The phones, available in the US in late May or early June, will be available on the Verizon Wireless network.  Vodafone is planning a European release at a as of now undisclosed time.
This marks new ground with Microsoft having total control over the hardware (manufactured by Sharp) and the device software.  It also marks new ground with Microsoft injecting the mobile arena with three different platforms, when Windows Phone 7 and Windows Mobile 6.5.x are thrown into the mix.
Is this a smart decision?  Time will tell.  Microsoft may be planning on saturating the market and providing an option for almost every potential cell phone user.  We already have Windows Mobile, aimed at the business and techie crowds, Windows Phone 7, aimed at the media enthusiasts and social networkers of the world and now the Kin, aimed at catching everyone in the gaps.
Such a venture might be smart, or it may lead to consumer confusion. You be the judge.  What are your thoughts?
