Opera mini for iPhone! has the fat lady sung?
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Nov 01 2008 - 27 views
Opera Mini is ready for the iPhone, but it can’t get approval for the app store. Now we all know Opera is the best Windows Mobile Browser right, and Opera mini, is the most versatile and complete browser over many platforms. As a phone at the moment, I’m using a basic Samsung phone, so for internet I use opera Mini, you can’t beat it. Opera Mini is the prefered browser of a lot of dumb phone users. If you are a Windows Mobile user you are probably going to be sporting a version of opera to circumvent MIE, cause let’s face it, it’s lacking at the moment [an update would be appreciated by all]
The idea though that Opera Mini has been rejected by Apple is a bit inflammatory to say the least. Of course it makes good copy to say Apple have rejected a respected application from the app store. Anything that goes up against or replicates native app’s on the iPhone, is not allowed.
One thing I would point out here is the source article from the NYTimes
I have to confess, I haven’t paid much attention to Opera Software until recently. The Norwegian company has been an also-ran in the browser market for 13 years.
The author has obviously not been paying attention to the mobile market, and it’s quite sad that a reputable publication can offer up such uninformed views.

Review: Sprite Backup 6.5
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Oct 03 2008 - 155 views
I’ve never looked at Sprite Backup before this review, so I’m approaching this as a novice, and to tell you the truth, I had to resort to the help file, and a couple of quick emails to work out how to get started with this application, but more on that later.
Sprite Backup is known as a great solution for windows mobile users, even allowing migration from one device to a new one, and across OS update’s as well. I’ve used another solution exclusively so I thought it was about time I had a comparison, to justify my product loyalty, or to be drawn in a completely new direction. As we all know a good backup solution is vital for any Windows Mobile user.
For someone like me, who is trying out all sorts of stuff, all of the time, it’s like having insurance, I never know what combination of software is going to make my device unstable. Therefore, I make a backup every time I install some new program.
So do you think I might be tempted to make Sprite Backup my new solution?

The I’m A PC, Monkey Dance!
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Sep 21 2008 - 15 viewsThe “I’m a PC” line of commercials, are a refreshing move by Microsoft, and highlight the strength of the platform. Let’s face it most people cut their computing teeth on a Micro$oft based system, and system loyalty, whether it be driven by apathy (sticking with what’s familiar, not wanting to experience a new OS learning curve, or discount years of specialisation, and therefore expertise). Then they go and spoil it with this! Click on the photo, or the link below to go to the I’m A PC page and view the Ballmer shenanigans.

The over the top styling’s of Ballmer don’t do a lot for me, although the Seinfeld/Gates advertisements left me cold as well.
When it comes down to the nitty gritty though, you must applaud the quality of the overall marketing package, that M$ have put together, and I will have to admit at this point that I’m a PC. I have to admit that M$ have done the best job ever of presenting their platform as cool and rugged, and the stereotype of the computer geek, proliferated in the Mac ads is far away from the images Microsoft are presenting now.
Now we are seeing a slicker, cooler and well much more rugged presentation of the PC/M$ OS. Depicting a much better metaphorical representation of what the OS can do for you ie; open a window to the world. The Windows revolution, or more pertinently, make over, is obviously designed to overcome the years of, well, undesirable impressions, of PC users. You know get a cool haircut and a netbook and you’re up there in the mobile tech world.
With all of the info seemingly focused on highlighting M$’s huge market share, and the proliferation of netbook PC’s, that are somehow dependent on an almost superceded OS.
I’m still sporting XP, upgrading to Vista, is not an option, it doesn’t, or isn’t as user friendly, IMHO,
The fact is though, we are not seeing Windows Mobile development, in any significant way, “slowly slowly catchee monkey” seems to be the ethos there.
I thought I do a construct of an Apple/PC advertisement, but Microsoft have done it.

The Oyster Opens, New Pearl…Flip
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Sep 10 2008 - 11 views
It was code named the kickstart, and it has on release on T-Mobile become the Pearl Flip. Now I would not think this is a bad marketing move, because we all know the pearl as a thing of beauty. Now most of us would know the build and design of the Moto Razr, which was an innovator for it’s time, but the recent regurgitation’s of the device have not really delivered.
So we now come to the first “flip” phone from BB, (BlackBerry). I can’t tell you much about this device, but it looks like something I’d want.
So you can check out the BB Pearl Flip at this link
This is probably the most anticipated handset of the near future, and it’s here.
There’s a video link as well
A lot of people have been waiting for this device, and I would like to get my hands on it as well.

Sony’s Got New Walkmans!
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Aug 28 2008 - 93 viewsI might be showing my age here, but the first Walkman I had looked something like the image on the left. I still have a lot of the cassettes that I used to play in it as well, but the worlds changed and so has the Walkman, and I just have to accept it.
Sony, today have unveiled three new models of the Walkman range, that’ll help you pump up the volume, and help you cut out the volume, or ambient noise around you with new noise cancellation features.
Read on for the more information about all three models
