Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta2, with Widgets

Posted by: Peter Murphy on Oct 21 2008 - 30 views

Opera95Beta2 After we saw the new alpha and expose of Firefox Fennnec, previewed last week, we  are privileged to get a new beta version of Opera’s browser to have a look at! Not to be out done of course, Opera have added widgets to the Beta. Whilst I have not fully tested this out yet, you can see by the screen shot, that the new Beta is having some rendering problems. Opera openly tell us about the reported problems/issues that are still to be fixed, and I’d go with that. There has been a flurry of  HTC devices with the RAM to run this browser, so loading it on the Axim and having a look is not as sweet as most would think. Still getting the out of memory messages. It is a beta though. I am a demanding taskmaster, I’d like the dev’s to remember that  there are a lot of us still using devices that don’t have the RAM capacity of the Diamond.

Back to the news, this new Opera beta is for WinMo, UIQ, and there is a SDK for S60 devices. It is all focused on touch screen devices. I haven’t really looked at the widgets yet, so I won’t offer an opinion on them, have a look at the press release, and see what you think!

Skyfire Mobile Browser…Now Available To All!

Posted by: dgoldring on Sep 25 2008 - 21 views

image I am quite a fan of the Skyfire Mobile Browser, having first used it when the initial private beta opened several months ago.  Since then, I have written about the browser on several occasions in this space, but there was always an awkward sort of tension in those articles.  Until now, you see, Skyfire was only available to a small (but growing) group of private beta testers.  I felt funny writing about such a fantastic program, which many of you readers could not see or use.  I could almost hear the grumblings of, “Elitist jerk” as you read my articles.  On the other hand, I felt a responsibility to tell you what great things could be coming soon (and no, I did not feel a responsibility to show you what you may have been missing!)

Well, that day has finally arrived.  No longer do I need to suffer the slings and arrows of your insults as I bring news of amazing wonders upon which your eyes may never feast.  Yeah, that’s right.  Skyfire has gone public.  With version 0.8, they have thrown open the doors, allowing one and all to come and check out their wares.  Just head over to the Skyfire page and get ready to be dazzled.

For more information and to learn about what is new in version 0.8, check out the full press release, or follow Skyfire on Twitter.
