Question of the Day: From whom do you buy your software?
With today’s announcement from PocketGear that they have acquired Handango, two of the major competing mobile software distributors have come under one brand. This eliminates one of the major players in the game of electronic software distributors, leaving only PocketGear, Mobihand and Handmark, that I can name off the top of my head.
Each of these three offer a venue for developers, charging a percentage of each sale in exchange for a developer having a potentially global marketplace. Over the years, these percentages have grown, with them sometimes reaching near 50 percent of the application price.
Of course, then there is the iTunes App Store. The ONLY (approved, that is) electronic software provider for the iPhone and iPod Touch. They charge a percentage as well, taking nearly 30 percent of the proceeds for an application.
We can’t dismiss that we are starting to see a LOT of individual application stores starting to appear. We have the Windows Mobile Marketplace, we App World for Blackberry, the Ovi Store, and so on. Each of these are attempts to capitalize on the success of the iTunes App Store.
Finally, you have the option, in most cases anyway, of buying direct from the developer’s site. This is a great way to reward the developer, as there is no corporation taking a percentage of the profits for an application that they don’t have any real stakes in.
In the past, I’ve bought from a number of different sources including PocketGear / PalmGear, Mobihand (the JAMM Store), Handango and individual developers. Buying direct from the individual developers is a great way to go when the opportunity arises, but sometimes the sales offered by the app stores is just too tempting. After all, even though I want to reward the developers, I have to watch out for my pocket book’s best interests as well.
So to wrap it up, fellow JAMMers, where do you buy your software? Hit the comments and let us know!
Until recently, for an iPhone app in the iTunes App Store to allow in-app purchases of content, the application itself had to be for sale. Earlier this week, Apple reversed course on this and started allowing free applications to offer in-app content purchases. Following on the heels of this announcement, comiXology has switched their Comics application’s price to free. The free version of Comics includes over 60 free comics, along with their exclusive series Box 13. Additional comics can be purchased directly through the application.
You can find out more about Comics by comiXology here.

You all know Clinton Fitch of Clinton Fitch (dot)com. He is a great friend of this si rte, and a fantastic reviewer. As most of you know, he has spent most of his time online with the Windows Mobile platform. He is a member of Mobius as well as a Windows Mobile MVP. So, you can imagine all of our surprise when Clinton announced this week that not only was he using an iPhone, but he was also going to start reviewing iPhone apps.
Now…I did not actually look this up, and I am no Biblical scholar, but I am pretty sure I remember the Seven Signs of the Apocalypse. Right there between the rivers turning to blood and the smiting of the first born son, I am pretty sure it must read, “Windows Mobile MVP starts using an iPhone.” And hen it continues on to read Thou Shalt Not Kill…OK, I did say I am no Biblical scholar. The point here, though, is that Clinton has turned to what many are calling the dark side, and like the F1 races he enjoys, he has gone full throttle.
Today, Clinton unleashed not one, but two iPhone app reviews. First he tackled Exact Magic Weather Radar, and then it was right on to the Zyrtec Allergy Cast. What is really cool here is that as much time as I have spent scouring the App Store, and reading iPhone App reviews, I had never heard of either of these apps. Which just goes to show that there is really something for everyone in there.
Don’t go thinking Clinton is done with Windows Mobile, though. Despite his apparent enthusiasm for the iPhone, he told me earlier that he keeps his favorite Windows Mobile device right next to the iPhone on his desk. So you can expect to continue to find a broad range of reviews…now on multiple platforms from Clinton.
Check out Clinton’s first forays into the iTunes App Store: Exact Magic Weather Radar and Zyrtec Allergy Cast over at Clinton Fitch (dot)com.
