Quick Look: King’s Corners

Posted by: dgoldring on Nov 19 2008 - 56 views

IMG_0055The simpler the rules, the greater the challenge.  Hey, it may not be Newtonian, but I think we can call this the First Law of Gaming.  The most difficult games to win are always the ones with simple rules which make you say regrettable things like, “this will only take a minute.”  The easy games, on the other hand, tend to be the ones with complex rules and complicated graphics and animation.  So, I suppose it should be taken as a compliment when I say that I have never met a game with simpler rules than King’s Corner.  And, true to what we will now call The First Law of Gaming, it is an incredibly challenging game to win.  Like Brandon said, this is a quick game.  It can take less than a minute to finish a game, yet you will soon find yourself playing for hours and hours…and mostly losing the game.  Simple? Yes.  Easy?   Not so much.

An Accelerometer Trifecta From Pangea

Posted by: dgoldring on Nov 02 2008 - 41 views

IMG_0024 IMG_0031

A while back, I had the opportunity to review Astraware’s first title for the iPhone/iPod Touch, GTS World Racing.  At the time, I was extremely impressed by the use of the accelerometer, rather than the touch screen to control most of the action.  Really, anytime I can control the action without touching the screen, that is going to make me happy.  There is nothing worse than pulling your phone out of your pocket and finding a smudged and fingerprinted mess on the screen from that game you were playing last night.  So, I loved being able to play games that require only minimal use of the touch screen, if any at all.  Apparently, Pangea took note of this development as well.  They have now released three games: Cro-Mag Rally, Nanosaur 2, and Bugdom 2, which rely almost exclusively on the accelerometer rather than the touch screen to control the action (a fourth game, Billy Frontier, also uses this control scheme, but has been previously reviewed.)  The great thing here is that although the three games all share the same method of control, they are also vastly different games, which see you driving and racing, flying through a prehistoric jungle, and running through the garden.  Hit the jump for a closer look at all three games.

Quick Look: Shufflepuck for iPhone and iPod Touch

Posted by: dgoldring on Oct 24 2008 - 43 views

I just wanted to take a quick minute to tell you all about a game on my iPod Touch that has been taking way too much of my time: Shufflepuck.  A lot of you are probably familiar with this game, which is a tabletop version of shuffleboard.  Over the years, I have seen variations of this game in numerous bars, restaurants, and old fashioned (as in non-video) game rooms (which are becoming few and far between.)   And I have to say that I was impressed by how true to the original game the iPod version came.

Astraware Brings Sudoku To The iPhone

Posted by: dgoldring on Oct 17 2008 - 8 views

I have been a fan of Sudoku ever since it began appearing locally in the Washington Post several years ago.  And in that time, I have tested, played, and reviewed virtually every Sudoku game available for Windows Mobile.  Through all of this testing, one of the best variations available has been the first Sudoku game I ever reviewed: Astraware Sudoku.

Now, Astraware is bringing all of the fantastic Sudoku gameplay to the iPhone, including the puzzle generator and Sudoku of the Day emails.  This is Astraware’s third foray into the iPhone market, as Sudoku joins GTS World Racing and Golden Skull.

Check out more information at the Astraware site, and then head on over to the iTunes App Store to download your copy today.

Review: Texas Hold’em for iPhone

Posted by: dgoldring on Oct 03 2008 - 80 views

texas hold'em

I have always loved playing poker.  I still remember when I was young, and my friend’s Dad taught me how to play seven card draw.  I won’t say I was hooked (because that might imply something far more sinister) but I had a blast playing.  Since then, I have been a member of both regular and (more often) semi-regular poker tables.  And I am always hunting for the latest and greatest electronic poker games on whatever device I am currently using.

I love playing these games electronically for two reasons.  First, have you ever tried to explain to your wife that you just lost $10,000 playing poker?  Yeah, much easier when it is imaginary money.  And second, it is much easier to win every once in a while.

So, with that in mind I decided to try out Texas Hold’em for the iPhone, one of the few games which was actually developed by Apple itself.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed on the iPhone

IMG_0076 IMG_0077

The Force Unleashed begins the way every Star Wars title does…the yellow text crawls dramatically up the screen, setting the stage for the adventure which is about to take place.  As that yellow scroll begins to fade, most of us will feel a slight tingle in our spine as the anticipation builds.  Then again, Star Wars has been something of a mixed bag lately.  Will this thrill and excite the way the original movies did in the 1970’s and 1980’s.  Or, will it be an overpriced, over-hyped event with a special effects albatross weighing it down.  Because it takes place in the time between the two trilogies…anything is possible.  Let’s take a closer look.
