Virgin Blogs from Mid Air, 35,000 feet to be Exact!
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Nov 23 2008 - 3 viewsThe option to use mobile devices on an air flight has often been a process surrounded in myth and fallacy. now, using a mobile phone or wireless device was bound to trigger explosive decompression, a failure in the flight controls or even worse, make the stewardess forget those annoying hand gestures in the pre flight tutorial about exiting the plane in case either of the formerly mentioned occurrences actually came to pass.
Recently we have seen the inaugural tests of in flight wifi trialed by a few service providers, and I took a deep breath today as a Twitter post from Ryan Block gave me a heads up to yet another trial.
This is one of the last frontiers for the truly mobile road warrior, imagine the productivity gains, if you could be online on your next eight hour Trans American flight. Well apparently the plane didn’t fall out of the sky, and people were posting quite happily from their cattle class seats as well as first class. The service offers up some impressive upload download speeds,
and Ryan wasn’t the only one to try out the service, and give a good report. There were also Cnet Bloggers on the Virgin expedition
This would have to become standard fare on all flights in the near future, don’t you think? Taking us out of the draconian era of internet and wireless silence of previous airline carriers.

Review: The Archos 5 Internet Media Tablet
Posted by: dgoldring on Oct 31 2008 - 281 viewsIt is always interesting when you can watch the evolution of a device firsthand over a period of time. I was lucky enough to have that experience with Archos. I first reviewed the Archos 604 media player. Shortly thereafter, I got a first-hand look at its successor, the aptly named 605. With their latest generation of player, however, this is no longer just a media player. Now, although it features much the same functionality, it is called an Internet Media Tablet. Media player, Internet tablet, will the this name change bring about a true change in identity, or is this just a new face on an old package. Read on for a closer look.

Internet Explorer Mobile 6, Waiting…
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Oct 30 2008 - 35 viewsWell well, an interesting article over at BrightHand.com today, let’s us know that the update to IEM that everyone’s been excited about, since the launch of WM 6.1, is imminent.
The current IE Mobile is based on a version of this browser that’s over a decade old.
Considering the age of IEM, a lot of windows mobile users have turned to third party browser solutions, like Opera mobile, or add-ons like ReenSoft’s PIEPlus, looking for a browsing experience similair to that which they experience on their desktop PC’s.
Hopefully an update to IEM, added to the update to the Mobile Office suite included on WM 6.1 will help complete Windows Mobile as a stand alone package, reducing the need to go into your wallet, to make it a really functional mobile OS.
According to a Microsoft spokesperson:
We recently gave Windows Mobile device makers the final updates to our new browser. It’s now up to our partners to roll out Internet Explorer Mobile 6 on their handsets; we’re expecting some of the first phones with IE6 to be available in Asia and Europe by the end of calendar year 2008, with U.S. offerings to follow.
There’s a video as well from a lot earlier in the piece, a teaser if you will, that will give you some idea of the updated functionality of MIE, but expect any release to be much more polished than this! Fingers crossed…
Here’s hoping we see this soon, and that it’s free?

What’s the Most Popular Phone For Web Browsing?
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Oct 17 2008 - 17 views
Lot’s of companies track, Internet usage from mobile phones, and incredibly the statistics show that Symbian/Linux based phones are the most used for net access. This may be surprising to most people, but seriously, if you think about it, Nokia’s phones seem to rule the handset market.
With service providers prepared to subsidise handsets on contracts, and most people’s need to save money, a lot of the non windows mobile, iPhone, models have been the norm for mobile phone preferences of the masses. Therefore you would not be surprised that the most popular, most used, phones used for internet browsing belong to the Motorola Razor family.
This statistic is pretty interesting: Not only does the Motorola (NYSE: MOT) Razr continue to outsell the Apple iPhone, more people are using it to access to the mobile Web. So says AdMob, anyway, in a report of the ad impressions it gets from each handset across the 5,000-plus sites it serves.
AdMob releases a report each month about the mobile advertising space. The company has been providing statistics on mobile ads since September 2007. This month’s report sheds some interesting light on which phones are surfing the mobile Web the most. It ain’t the iPhone. In fact, the iPhone isn’t even in second place
With the advanced browsers available on the iPhone and windows mobile, it sort of seems odd, but then again, I’ve got a really simple samsung phone, with opera mini installed, and I do actually use it quite a bit for essentials, checking email, checking JAMM, and also going through my Google reader feeds. The fact that the Razr is still featuring so prominently in the mobile arena is probably the most surprising fact that comes out of this though.

Microsoft Enter the Browser Wars… Maybe
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Sep 28 2008 - 15 views
Who would have thought that after all of this time, Microsoft would actually come up with an update for MIE [Mobile Internet Explorer]. Based on IE6, which is still undoubtedly the choice for lot’s of companies with secure monitored software environments, I mean at work a lot of us are tethered to this older desktop version.
On our Windows mobile devices, MIE is at about IE4. Many users have resorted to third party browsers, Opera, Netscape, and Mozilla come to mind, and there are many more out there still like Makayama Touch Browser, Iris, and of course Skyfire that’s just gone to open beta in the US.
Now what really gets to me about this, is the fact that Microsoft are so slow, and have really been shown the way by other developers, and their responses to the browsing needs of windows Mobile users are nil. We are still waiting. Apparently, this will be an update of the likes of Mobile Office, something you can download and install, like a patch to your WM6.xx device.
The Unwired seem to have the lowdown on the new MIE, on some sort of very strange screen size. Even the author at the Unwired, airs his doubts about the shots and the update.
So far so good. But some things irritates me: Why does the scrollbars on the right and bottom look like Windows 95 or Windows CE? That’s not the "fresh" Windows Mobile 6.1 style. Also I haven’t seen a single indication of "tabbed browsing" which means Internet Explorer Mobile 6 might still offers a single instance for Web browsing only.
I’m not going to hold my breath, but really, when could we expect the native browser of Windows Mobile to get some class, and save us some money updating third party applications?

The iPod Touch Review. Part 4: The Internet
Posted by: dgoldring on Aug 16 2008 - 159 views
One of the most impressive aspects of the iPod Touch is the way it utilizes the mobile Internet. Phones and mobile devices have been accessing the Internet for over ten years now, but the iPod Touch/iPhone is the first mobile browser to really unleash the power of the full Internet on your mobile device. From Safari to the Cloud, this was the first mobile device I have ever used which integrated the online experience into your everyday use of the device.
