FireFox Mobile, Fennec, Gets Alpha 2!
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Dec 28 2008 - 37 views
Well we have all been disappointed at the news that MIE 6 is not going to evolve into a patch for all windows mobile devices, but is being limited to more recent, RAM on steroids, devices. The same goes for Opera Mobile 9.5, seems you are going to have to up your investment in a device if you want a better browsing experience on your mobile device.
The Browser wars, which essentially are the result of mobile device users wanting the equivalent of a desktop, big screen experience on a rather smaller device, have stalled a bit lately.
Mozilla have an offering, Minimo, that has long been relegated to the bench. They have though, been fiddling about, with a little project, that will hopefully, bring a useable version of FireFox for Windows Mobile.
Mozilla have released the second Alpha of their Fennec browser for WinMo [where do they come up with the names?], that is a step forward towards their new mobile offering.
As Fennec development continues to move forward, the value and significance of having the complete Firefox stack in a mobile environment is becoming increasingly apparent. Developers have already started creating innovative add-ons for the new browser that increase its functionality in various ways. For example, the TwitterBar extension allows users to post to Twitter directly from the Fennec address bar. An early Fennec port of Mozilla’s Weave framework is also underway.
Ars Technica, bring a whole heap of detail to the release.
The fact is you still can’t see any better than a technical preview, unless you have a Nokia N810 tablet. Hit the link below for your under privileged preview

FireFox for Mobile: You Lucky So and So!
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Oct 18 2008 - 82 viewsI’ve been waiting rather impatiently for some news or a an alpha from Mozilla, on their new mobile browser. Today, I find out that I have the wrong device, to get an early look at FireFox for Mobile. It’s not often I find myself rolling on the floor screaming, like a child in the supermarket, denied that sugary treat.
so it looks like, if you’ve got a Nokia internet tablet, the N800 or N810, you are going to be able to take this for a spin around the block, before me.
How would you like to be among the first to get touchy-feely with the next mobile browser everyone’s talking about? Mozilla’s release of the Firefox for Mobile alpha code, code-named Fennec, grants that wish to users of the Nokia N810 and N800 Internet tablet (installation details here)
So if you’ve got one of these devices, let us know when you install the browser, so we can fume some more over our lack of a Nokia communicator! But wait there’s more, you can download a version that you can have a look at on your
Computer, no matter what flavour, a very small reprieve for all of us!

Browser War Bomb… Mozilla Mobile?
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Oct 08 2008 - 60 viewsNot that I’m obsessive or any thing, but the quest for a windows mobile browser that serves up a desktop browsing experience is, a lot of peoples gripe. Opera have a good solution, but it is tailored to really top end windows mobile devices like the Diamond and the touch HD. device memory seems to be the key with all of the newer browsers.
Apparently the rumoured entry from Mozilla is about to go to Alpha testing, when earlier we heard that it would not appear for years. It seems there’s going to be a release, and if someone could tell me how to get on to the alpha team I’d appreciate it.

This May not be News!
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Oct 04 2008 - 10 viewsJust been going through a few feeds and came across a disturbing post at one of my favourite sites. Apparently CoolSmartPhone.com is evil.
Seems they have had a little hiccough, and it should be fixed, sometime?
This just highlights the fact that you can have things like this happening with your site and they don’t show up in Windows Mobile applications. I’ve had no problem updating the site in NewsBreak, or Opera on WinMo, but in Firefox, I get a real red danger message!
Hopefully it’ll be fixed soon!
Good Luck Guys
Oh if you get the red screen of death you can By-Pass it, if you are game! There’s no reason not to! It does show though, that there are exploits we are not aware of, and all bloggers and site masters should have a look at this problem
