Internet Explorer Mobile 6, Waiting…
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Oct 30 2008 - 38 viewsWell well, an interesting article over at BrightHand.com today, let’s us know that the update to IEM that everyone’s been excited about, since the launch of WM 6.1, is imminent.
The current IE Mobile is based on a version of this browser that’s over a decade old.
Considering the age of IEM, a lot of windows mobile users have turned to third party browser solutions, like Opera mobile, or add-ons like ReenSoft’s PIEPlus, looking for a browsing experience similair to that which they experience on their desktop PC’s.
Hopefully an update to IEM, added to the update to the Mobile Office suite included on WM 6.1 will help complete Windows Mobile as a stand alone package, reducing the need to go into your wallet, to make it a really functional mobile OS.
According to a Microsoft spokesperson:
We recently gave Windows Mobile device makers the final updates to our new browser. It’s now up to our partners to roll out Internet Explorer Mobile 6 on their handsets; we’re expecting some of the first phones with IE6 to be available in Asia and Europe by the end of calendar year 2008, with U.S. offerings to follow.
There’s a video as well from a lot earlier in the piece, a teaser if you will, that will give you some idea of the updated functionality of MIE, but expect any release to be much more polished than this! Fingers crossed…
Here’s hoping we see this soon, and that it’s free?

Microsoft Enter the Browser Wars… Maybe
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Sep 28 2008 - 16 views
Who would have thought that after all of this time, Microsoft would actually come up with an update for MIE [Mobile Internet Explorer]. Based on IE6, which is still undoubtedly the choice for lot’s of companies with secure monitored software environments, I mean at work a lot of us are tethered to this older desktop version.
On our Windows mobile devices, MIE is at about IE4. Many users have resorted to third party browsers, Opera, Netscape, and Mozilla come to mind, and there are many more out there still like Makayama Touch Browser, Iris, and of course Skyfire that’s just gone to open beta in the US.
Now what really gets to me about this, is the fact that Microsoft are so slow, and have really been shown the way by other developers, and their responses to the browsing needs of windows Mobile users are nil. We are still waiting. Apparently, this will be an update of the likes of Mobile Office, something you can download and install, like a patch to your WM6.xx device.
The Unwired seem to have the lowdown on the new MIE, on some sort of very strange screen size. Even the author at the Unwired, airs his doubts about the shots and the update.
So far so good. But some things irritates me: Why does the scrollbars on the right and bottom look like Windows 95 or Windows CE? That’s not the "fresh" Windows Mobile 6.1 style. Also I haven’t seen a single indication of "tabbed browsing" which means Internet Explorer Mobile 6 might still offers a single instance for Web browsing only.
I’m not going to hold my breath, but really, when could we expect the native browser of Windows Mobile to get some class, and save us some money updating third party applications?

Weekend Deal From ScottEVest!
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Sep 27 2008 - 10 views
We all love a bargain right, well this weekend deal from ScottEVest, is a real treat, especially with free “ground shipping” in the US. I’m assuming ground shipping refers to regular snail mail services, and not that some lackey, drags your purchase to your front door and deposits it there.
Now that it’s autumn, you’ll be wanting some warmer clothing, and the discounted Explorer Jacket which is Normally $150, discounted to $100 for this offer may be for you. The jacket features a whole heap of tech savvy inclusions to compliment your device usage while on the go. Why would I bother typing this and sounding like some sort of PR guy when I can get my friend, Scott to tell you about the jacket himself!
