The Eve of Android!

Posted by: Peter Murphy on Sep 22 2008 - 16 views

Now, I’m not going to get anywhere near the Dream from Google, in anything like the near future, so any sort of info or hands on, visual display of the OS, the phone actually operating, is vital to me. A new mobile operating system, on a new if somewhat, ungainly appearing device, that is exclusive, is something I’m interested in {read obsessed}.

The video above that I found at Experience Mobility, {thanks Jack}, has done nothing to extinguish my interest in this device. The video is the best Demo of the Android interface I’ve seen, and there are some specs and features discussed, the importance of I hadn’t twigged to. have a look at the 300 Mhz device running Quake, graphics are good.{understatement} Being an OS from Google, you would expect to see some apps focused on their already existing application base. Streetview being one of them. So when you get your Dream, could you let me know how good/bad/or indifferent it is?

Dream A Little Dream With Me (and HTC)

Posted by: dgoldring on Sep 19 2008 - 27 views

The HTC Dream, aka T-Mobile G1, may well be the worst kept secret in the mobile world.  As Peter told us earlier, leaked images, specs, and a myriad of conflicting rumors abound.  And now, just to add fuel to the fire, we bring you a few more.  These are pictures which were leaked straight out of Google headquarters…where apparently they have never heard the word, “security.”

No new details or specs are available, but these are the first images of the phone actually in use.  Personally, I think the thing looks like a brick.  It just seems huge in that guy’s hands.  And the keyboard.  It is hard to pass judgment until you have actually used it, but those chiclet style keys look tiny.  And don’t get me started on the asymetrical design.  With that large hunk of plastic on the right and smooth edge on the left, this thing looks completely unbalanced, meaning prone to being dropped a lot.  But don’t just take my word for it.  let us know what you think.  Is the Dream your dream device, or is this one shaping up to be a nightmare?

Android confirmed, Visits London!

Posted by: Peter Murphy on Sep 17 2008 - 13 views

godzilla

Apparently the official announcement is looming, scheduled for September twenty third, The Android will officially emerge at a T-mobile event.

Over at Android community, it looks like they’re packing their bags and gearing up for the big event. Now some may say it’s a monster emerging, many have told me the available apps for Android are … lacklustre at the most, the enthusiasm with which many have met the iPhone SDK, primarily as a money maker, for an already established device, dwarves the development  reaction, for the, until now, rumoured Google phone. It’s like comparing Godzilla to a skink.

Now we’ve had an inkling that this was coming, and an idea of what the device will look like, but Google itself decided to trot out the OS early in London, for European consumption. The images of the unbranded phone/device do look something like this, but the subterfuge will be over next Wednesday, and I’ll be able to go back to my knitting undisturbed.

HTC Dream… or your worst nightmare?

Posted by: Peter Murphy on Aug 31 2008 - 65 views

Now I don’t know if it’s the leopard skin background, or the fact that this is probably the  ugliest HTC device that I’ve seen in a long time, you’d have to assume that the OS makes up for it. The aforementioned specs for the Dream, let’s face it, were not super, as far as the current batch of HTC devices go.

More info has come to light, suggesting that the original quoted specs were undercooked, and the dream is empowered with 256Rom/128Ram, which would make a lot more sense.  We’ve also got a new moniker, the G1

The G1’s specs and features are still unknown but it is rumoured to sport a 528Mhz Qualcomm 7201 processor; Data kit for USB connectivity in the box; 128MB Internal RAM; 256MB Internal ROM, 1GB MicroSD card; Dedicated camera button; 3.1MP camera (no flash) 2048 x 1536; Video playback files - H.264, streaming, 3GPP, MPEG4, and Codec 3GP and a Dedicated YouTube Player.  Yes, I agree the memory is really low, but this is still a rumour so take it with a grain of salt.

All right I’m looking at this and I’m thinking, well I’m revising my thoughts, the images are bad, and actually are probably misleading. I’m taken aback by the unfamiliar design, and I’m hoping this works, it’s like a weird tilt. The T-Mobile branding and the cornucopia of comparative shots, seem to defy the possibility of a mock-up, but the dream might still be something that keeps you awake at night.
