Side Sight: Touch Screens Without The Touch?

image

Apparently, Microsoft has been hard at work developing a whole new kind of touch screen.  Sides Sight is a touch screen, which responds to your gestures near the screen, but does not require you to actually touch it with your fingers.  imagine, all of the functionality in your current touch screen device…but none of the fingerprints and smudges.

According to Gizmodo, this new technology works by shooting infrared beams from the sides of the device.  These beams, which are arranged in two rows, spaced 10 mm apart, track the user’s movements and gestures on the surface of the device.  This allows you to control the display on the screen by moving your hands near and around the screen, but not actually touching it.

This technology is still in the early phase of development, so no word on when (or if) we may see it.  I’m not holding my breath for it coming in time for Windows Mobile 7.  Then again, that would explain the longer than expected wait for the new operating system.  What do you all think?  Could this be a revolutionary new user interface/  Or is Microsoft just tilting at windmills trying to knock the iphone off of its perch?

Quick Look: eSoft Stacks It Up With Totem

pc_capture11

I have not played a lot of stacking games for Windows Mobile, so this genre was a bit new to me.  The idea here is to stack the blocks as high as you can.  Unlike say, Tetris, which allows you to guide the bricks all the way down until they land safely in that open space; in Totem, the blocks hanging from the top of the screen, swinging from one side to the other like a pendulum.  Once you drop it, the block will be released and free fall until it hits the top of the stack (hopefully).

Review: Sony Reader PRS-505. Why I May Never Buy Another Book Again

IMG_2108There.  I said it.  after using this ebook reader for only a few days, I have already decided to phase out paper and ink books.  This is no rash decision, mind you.  I am an avid book lover. I have shelves in every room in the house, boxes of books in the basement.  Add to that the fact I have spent the last few years decrying ebooks: there is no unified format, the screens are not good for reading, the screens are too small, the list goes on.  So, I admit to being a bit apprehensive about trying this one.  My apprehension, however, quickly turned to delight as I found that every concern I had previously raised was addressed in here.  It is light, easy to read, and the library is enormous.  But I am getting ahead of myself.
