Check Out The New Clinton Fitch…Same As The Old Clinton Fitch…Only Better!

I just got an email from our good friend Clinton Fitch, owner of the popular review site, Clinton Fitch(dot)com.  In his message, Clinton announces the newest redesign of his site, as well as the new URL.  I have always been a huge fan of Clinton’s reviews, and I am thrilled to see the redesign of his site, which features a much more traditional look and feel, as well as fantastic search engine optimization.  You can check out all the new features at http://blog.clintonfitch.com/  Don’t just take it from me, though.  Here is Clinton Fitch himself to tell you the rest:

After countless hours of work, some of which you have seen already, the new 5.0 version of ClintonFitch.com is officially launched!

The new site is the culmination of feedback from fellow bloggers, readers and research and brings you what I hope to be the best experience on the site yet.  ClintonFitch.com has attracted nearly 24 million visitors since its opening in August 2004 and each time I do a site upgrade or design change I keep you, the readers in mind.  It is my hope that you will find the new site easier to navigate, easier to read and generally more attractive to view.http://blog.clintonfitch.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif

The list of changes that have been made to ClintonFitch.com are really too numerous to layout but I want to touch on the highlights that really impact you, the readership.

  • The layout is much cleaner and easier to read on the Home Page.  Now you get the first couple of paragraphs of an article at most with the ability to click and read further if you choose to do so.  Links are easily identifiable in each article.
  • Every article now allows you to share it via your Twitter or Facebook account.  This was the number one requested change of the site and I’m glad to have it as an option.
  • Advertisements are clearly identified and in the same location in each article and in the sidebars.  Like them or hate them, advertising pays the bills at ClintonFitch.com and your clicks on ads and purchases at the affiliate stores are greatly appreciated.  But I want you to know you are clicking on an ad or affiliate store so I have clearly labled them as such with the only exception being the easily identifiable Google advert at the end of each article.
  • The site has been completely optimized for Bing and Google searches making it far easier to find articles using your favorite search engine.
  • The new search funtion located at the top right of each page allows you to easily search ClintonFitch.com
  • New RSS subscriptions for posts, comments and daily email updates are available via the links at the top right of each page
  • Completely new color scheme which is easier to read both on big and small displays
  • New mobile version of the site optimized for today’s advanced devices.  The mobile site autodetects if you are on a mobile device so no need to keep up with a different URL.  Just go to http://blog.clintonfitch.com straight from your mobile browser.  It has been tested on Windows Phone, iPhone, Android and WebOS.
  • Ability to leave comments on each article, the 2nd most requested feature change
  • Links to fellow mobile community sites in the left sidebar on each page of ClintonFitch.com
  • Twitter feed updates from what I am Tweeting on at any time (you can follow me at http://www.twitter.com/clintonfitch)
  • Updated About and Advertising pages

As you can see, the list is extensive but that does not mean it is perfect.  Your feedback is critical.  If you like a feature, let me know.  If you hate a feature, let me know!  My goal here is to keep you coming back and making the experience better is my goal.

A huge thank you goes out to Judie Lipsett over at Gear Diary.  I consider Judie my closest friend amongst many colleagues in the mobile blogging community and her input and testing of components of the site have been a huge help.

While the visual and functional side of ClintonFitch.com has change, the content hasn’t and won’t.  My main focus has been and will continue to be to provide software and hardware reviews of Windows Phone, iPhone and Android base mobile devices as well as Windows-based PCs.

Finally, thank you for your readership.  ClintonFitch.com started as a small project that has turned into a great fun and passion.

Welcome!  Come in and stay a while!

So, don’t forget to redirect your web browsers and RSS feeds to the new site.  You won’t want to miss a single review!

Clinton Fitch Completes His iPhone Trifecta, With Flight Control

Clinton Fitch wasted absolutely no time.  Within what seemed like minutes after he got his iPhone, he had already cranked out two reviews, even managing to find two apps which I had never heard of before, despite having used the iPod Touch for well over a year.

Yesterday, Clinton posted his thoughts on Firemint’s Flight Control, which has long been one of my favorite apps on the ipod Touch/iPhone platform.  As usual,. Clinton does a fantastic job of walking you through every aspect of the game, which he refers to as a, “time suck.”   In his review, Clinton states:

As I said at the beginning, Flight Control is amazingly addictive.  The challenge of having to keep track of multiple aircraft, land them and make sure they don’t hit each other is fun and consuming at times.  You will learn which patterns work for you and on which airfields and you’ll be longing to play more to try them out.

Windows Mobile MVP Clinton Fitch Vs. The iPhone

You all know Clinton Fitch of Clinton Fitch (dot)com.  He is a great friend of this si rte, and a fantastic reviewer.  As most of you know, he has spent most of his time online with the Windows Mobile platform.  He is a member of Mobius as well as a Windows Mobile MVP.  So, you can imagine all of our surprise when Clinton announced this week that not only was he using an iPhone, but he was also going to start reviewing iPhone apps.

Now…I did not actually look this up, and I am no Biblical scholar, but I am pretty sure I remember the Seven Signs of the Apocalypse.  Right there between the rivers turning to blood and the smiting of the first born son, I am pretty sure it must read, “Windows Mobile MVP starts using an iPhone.”  And hen it continues on to read Thou Shalt Not Kill…OK, I did say I am no Biblical scholar.  The point here, though, is that Clinton has turned to what many are calling the dark side, and like the F1 races he enjoys, he has gone full throttle.

Today, Clinton unleashed not one, but two iPhone app reviews.  First he tackled Exact Magic Weather Radar, and then it was right on to the Zyrtec Allergy Cast.  What is really cool here is that as much time as I have spent scouring the App Store, and reading iPhone App reviews, I had never heard of either of these apps.   Which just goes to show that there is really something for everyone in there.

Don’t go thinking Clinton is done with Windows Mobile, though.  Despite his apparent enthusiasm for the iPhone, he told me earlier that he keeps his favorite Windows Mobile device right next to the iPhone on his desk.  So you can expect to continue to find a broad range of reviews…now on multiple platforms from Clinton.

Clinton Fitch Reviews Spb Radio

Figure 2 - SPB Radio Streaming Content

I am no longer using Windows Mobile these days, but I know a lot of your are, including our good friend Clinton Fitch.  One of the things I have really missed since making the move to the Palm Pre are some of my favorite software developers.  Spb Software, for example, has shown almost no inclination to make the move to WebOS, much to my chagrin.

Clinton, who is currently using the HTC Touch Pro, had an opportunity to test out Spb’s latest offering, Spb Radio.  I have to say, this looks like a fantastic app, which allows you to stream Internet radio stations directly to your Windows Mobile phone.  This is almost enough to make me consider switching back to Windows Mobile…well, not right now, but maybe once Windows Mobile 7 comes out next year.

In his typically thorough review, Clinton notes:

I’ve been using SPB Radio for several weeks now and have found it to be a great joy.  It allows me to listen to content that I would not otherwise be able to access readily (I’m a big fan of Jazz music but in Dallas we do not have a Jazz-only station).  The user interface is intuitive and the fact that SPB made it completely finger driven is a big plus.  Another big plus is that you can use it with WiFi which can save on monthly bandwidth and you are not subjected to signal drops, especially if you are listening while driving.

As I mentioned earlier, I strongly suggest you have an unlimited data plan when using SPB Radio.  The application does a great job of optimizing streams but you are still transferring data to your phone.  I usually listen to music using SPB Radio 3-4 hours per day.  In that time I easily rack up 100MB of data usage.
