It’s really been an exciting trip, watching the introduction of the HTC/T-Mobile G1 Android phone. I’m watching from afar, as you know, so I probably have a different take on it to most. Especially those that actually have their hands on the G1 at the moment. With all of the mobile news I try to digest every day, I do form opinions, and Android has left me with many questions.
HTC did what they promised and released the first GooPhone, but lot’s of other companies signed up for the Open Handset Alliance, and I suppose it’s about time they waded into the picture. Who else is wading into the melee?

We are all pretty familiar with mobile devices/phones that don’t really have a lot of onboard storage. Thus device expandability, the addition of memory card slots, is like an all-you-can-eat buffet for your device. Expandability on Palm and WinMo devices enables you to install as many apps on your device as you want and frees up the device’s onboard memory. This sort of expandability is available across all mobile phone platforms. So why would it be omitted from Android?
A review over at, and I’m not in the habit of linking here, the Wall Street Journal lets us know that
This seems to be a huge oversight to me, the G1 ships with a 1 Gb microSD card and it seems it’s only available for storage. if the phone can’t run apps off the available card space, you are limited to a very select number of favourite apps on your phone at any one time.
Hopefully the planned OTA update for the G1 addresses this, but it doesn’t seem likely at the moment!

Everything You Wanted To Know About the G1
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Oct 16 2008 - 23 viewsEverything you wanted to know, and probably some stuff you would never have thought about. Mat Miller over at ZDnet blogs literally shows off every feature of the G1, in one of the most thorough device reviews I’ve ever seen
. 
Out of the box first thoughts: I spent a couple of hours with the device in New York at the launch event so I wasn’t really surprised by the hardware of the G1. However, without the security tether attached to the device I was able to get a better feel for the device in your hand and overall construction quality.

G1 Android, Shipping and Reviewed !

With about a week to go till the aforementioned availability of the T-mobile G1 Android phone, things are hotting up. It looks like pre ordered G1 units are on the move, according to Phandroid. How they got this info out of UPS I wouldn’t know.
Just a quick heads up for anyone who pre-ordered their T-Mobile G1 to check the UPS Website for a tracking number and shipping date. At least 2 readers have contacted us saying they have shipping information today and that the shipping method is via 3-day… meaning you could receive your T-Mobile G1 as early as the 17th and definitely by the 21st.
The G1 is already circulating though, and of course some of the bigger sites are already getting real hands on time/review units to help muster buyers for the in store release of the first Google phone. Both Engadget and Gizmodo, have detailed reviews of the G1 posted today, which are not uncomplimentary, but point to the fact that the OS is a first release and will probably need some work.
The G1 phone and the Android operating system are not finished products. There are only three working Google App’s here—Gmail, Maps and Calendar—while Google Docs, Google News, Google Reader, Google Shopping, Google Images, Google Video, Blogger and Picasa are nowhere to be found. What’s the deal? gizmodo
Looks like people are going to have to wait for a complete Google experience on the platform, a bit like bender not functioning until he’s had a few beers!

Everything’s coming up Android!

The fact that it’s an open system, welcoming developers to add to it’s functionality, with seemingly no limitations, says the sky’s the limit. So eventually you would think this will be a boon both to industry and personal users. Let’s face it, it’s not going to be a Blackberry,out of the box, and there are not going to be a range of great applications available for a while till the platform proves itself, and some of the more mainstream developers who already have experience with cross platform programming, decide to wade in to the mix.
There are a few, I don’t know how many,[I’m sure I know at least one person that’s got one and can’t say] people who already are Hands on with the G1. A forum member over at Android Community, has done what may be the first public review of the G1. Again, I’m sure this person will get their wrist slapped for this.
The real news though is that other manufacturers are going to pick up the OS and build appropriate devices. Even rumours that the Touch HD, [which isn’t coming to the US any time soon, WinMo flavoured] will somehow appear in an Android version, I’d like to see that. Anyway, twelve days to go so back to normal viewing…

Head on over and have a look, and I pity the poor employee that leaked these shots, I’m sure with some enhancement, the proud owner will be able to be linked to these shots!
