Now This Is Mobile Technology! part 23

Posted by: Peter Murphy on Dec 18 2008 - 25 views

phone1_wideweb__470x387,0 What is the trend in mobile tech that is the most dominant? Anyone? Is it hot, or is it not?

Probably the highest use of any mobile device relates to internet access, I’ve got a very low level Sammie mobile phone, but it runs a software that supports java, and hence, with 3g access on the phone, I’ve got a conduit to the intertubes. More and more of mobile users are beginning to take this for access for granted, and for many new mobile adoptee’s, it is why they go to smartphones no matter what the OS flavour.

I’m just thinking about 56 Kbps dial up right now, I think it still exists, but who would put up with it?

Well some industry bigheads got together and crunched some numbers, and the outcome reads

A survey of internet leaders, activists and analysts shows they expect major tech advances as the phone becomes a primary device for online access, voice-recognition improves, artificial and virtual reality become more embedded in everyday life, and the architecture of the internet itself improves.

So the best and most popular way to access the internet will be via mobile phone, I question that?

The fact that we have more powerful networks to access and devices that can access them seems to undermine the point that the “mobile phone” is the mover and shaker of the mobile internet world.. The 3G modem is the kicker in this story, I might check email on my phone, and see what people are posting here and do Twitter on the phone, but if I want to do anything that feels meaningful on the site I am dependant on a 3G USB modem, and a netbook. Viewing the internet is one thing, but freely, actively participating in the internet experience, still takes a bit more than a mobile phone in my opinion.

One  of my thoughts here is that this is a pretty focused view with a target demographic, thus relating in the research results and conclusions. In the end, it really shows me that I’m addicted to the internet and that sort of virtual communication, so these guys are right, and wrong, and just don’t know!

Virgin Blogs from Mid Air, 35,000 feet to be Exact!

Posted by: Peter Murphy on Nov 23 2008 - 18 views

The option to use mobile devices on an air flight has often been a process surrounded in myth and fallacy. now, using a mobile phone or wireless device was bound to trigger explosive decompression, a failure in the flight controls or even worse, make the stewardess forget those annoying hand gestures in the pre flight tutorial about exiting the plane in case either of the formerly mentioned  occurrences actually came to pass.

Recently we have seen the inaugural tests of in flight wifi trialed by a few service providers, and I took a deep breath today as a Twitter post from Ryan Block gave me a heads up to yet another trial.

TwitRBlockWiFlight

This is one of the last frontiers for the truly mobile road warrior, imagine the productivity gains, if you could be online on your next eight hour Trans American flight. Well apparently the plane didn’t fall out  of the sky, and people were posting quite happily from their cattle class seats as well as first class. The service offers up some impressive upload download speeds,

WiFlightUpDown

and Ryan wasn’t the only one to try out the service, and give a good report. There were also Cnet Bloggers on the Virgin expedition

virginGeeksOnPlane

This would have to become standard fare on all flights in the near future, don’t you think? Taking us out of the draconian era of internet and wireless silence of previous airline carriers.

netfrontBrowserWidgets Earlier in the year I took a Quick Look at the beta of the Netfront browser widget application, and whilst I was not thrilled with it, it did show potential. Well Access have announced the new community site for the Widgets. What’s new for potential users?

What’s New:

There’s an updated player for windows mobile and a few more widgets available. Most notably, there are developer tools, allowing anyone to create new widgets if they want to. Open Access! Click the link below to go to the Press release and the site.

Quick Look, NFB Widgets!

Posted by: Peter Murphy on Jul 16 2008 - 121 views

 sshot001 What’s a Widget? Is it like a thing-a-me-bob?

widg·et (wjt)

n.

1. A small mechanical device or control; a gadget.

2. An unnamed or hypothetical manufactured article.

[Perhaps alteration of gadget.]

When I posted about Access’s new addition to the Netfront family I didn’t think I’d be brought to my knees by a widget. We are all familiar with widgets with our desktop browsers, but the addition of dedicated widgets to a Windows Mobile browser seemed like a novelty. Well it’s not a novelty, and it’s not even funny. The base application installs on it’s own then you add widgets, like modules, to the base application. You can add weather, news, world time, whatever widgets are available now.
