Zune… There I said it!
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Sep 14 2008 - 119 viewsOne of the things I haven’t seen is the new Zune UI, after the latest update that Heather let us know about, so here is a video of it in action, and if you use the video controls, you can look at a lot more footage of the interface, it looks cool. One of the things that impresses me is the smoothness of the animations, seems to say, the updates have made a real difference. Although I’d like to hear it from Zune JAMMers out there. Tell us about your upgrade experience, if you dare?
Please, though, don’t tell Brandon that I posted this!
Edit: crap, my name’s on the post, I hope He’s got coffee

Attack of the 10,000 Netbooks
Posted by: Heather on Aug 23 2008 - 11 views
Doesn’t it seem like everyday a new company announces that its releasing a ‘netbook’ or a ‘mini-laptop’. I am just waiting for McDonald’s to announce their entry, the McBook or the McNet. With all of the choices available, how do you keep all of the information straight? How do you make the best decision on what to buy? Lucky for us, the people over at Liliputing have done all the work. They have a comprehensive list of all the netbooks available. You can even sort the list by price, CPU, RAM, etc. Its an excellent spreadsheet, so if you are interested in a netbook, definitely check it out. Plus, how can you not love a name like ‘Liliputing’.

Quick Tip: Palm Freeware I Can’t Live Without
Posted by: weiganla on Jun 28 2008 - 311 viewsPalm OS isn’t all bad. Seriously. It really is easy to use, and it has a ridiculous software catalog that I’ve seen listed as 20,000 titles. Okay, so maybe 19,000 of them are about a decade old, but there’s some good stuff hidden out there. I’m a cheapskate, so since I got my Centro a few months ago I’ve been prowling for freeware.
Hands down my favorite find so far is SkinUI. Palm’s UI hasn’t changed much since, like, the 80s, except now
instead of being stuck in gray-tan and black you can choose from a whole menu of ugly color schemes. SkinUI to the rescue! Download skins here — my favorites are Cobalt and Tiger — install the program and skins to main memory and you’ve got an instant makeover.
The most useful freebie I’ve found is AttnGrab. It can make your device beep, vibrate, or flash its LED light when you have a missed alert. I have it set to shine the LED on missed calls and SMSs, so if I’ve been away from my phone or turned off the sound I know at a glance if anyone tried to reach me.
One of my pet peeves with mobile devices is that most of them won’t tell you how much battery you have left. They’ve got those little barrel-in-three-pieces monitors that don’t tell you squat, and I don’t trust those things farther than I can throw them anyway. So I was happy to find Watchmaker, which in addition to the battery monitor handles alarms and comes with a collection of reasonably good-looking skins.
These three programs are just a few of the good Palm freewares I’ve run across. Since JAMM is expanding our Palm coverage I hope I can make this a regular column, and I’m on the lookout for suggestions. Leave a comment below if you have a tip!

Sorta kinda control Mac/PC remotely via iPhone
Posted by: Ragart on Jun 18 2008 - 295 views
Ever been really, really desperate to remote access your computer while on the move? If you’re not subscribing to something like Sugarsync to access your files, jkOnTheRun has discovered a way to help you out…well, kinda. Using LogMeIn (a paid or free account — although the free account might not do this for much longer) on your iPhone’s Safari browser can actually grant you semi-usable remote access. Tap something on Safari and it will happen on your computer, but waiting for the response on your iPhone is something else entirely. If controlling your computer at less than 1 FPS is something you think you’re patient enough to do (an d that you have the time for!), just remember to turn on HTML as opposed to ActiveX inside of your LogMeIn prefs.

Los Angeles, CA (December 14, 2007) - WorldMate, Inc., the leading provider of mobile travel services for the road warrior and frequent flier, announced today the launch of its mobile travel solution for Windows Mobile Professional Pocket PCs at no charge to road warriors. As a result, it now supports all major smartphone platforms through its Freemium business model.

There are also premium services that require a subscription that costs,
US $74.95 a year. There are a lot of travel utilities out there, but I downloaded this, after looking at the press release, to have a look and I can survive without the premium services. I downloaded WorldMate to my Dell Axim x51v, via BT DUN, the cab is 7.5 Mb and it downloaded flawlessly. When I saw the size of the cab file, I was a little worried, but I was able to install to SD card without a problem, ( I install everything I can to the SD card to save device memory). I played with the application for about five minutes, and was sold. For a free program it offers a great range of tools that are not only handy for a traveller, it offers practical everyday tools. Hit the link to read an overview of what the free WorldMate has to offer

WM6 Standard: Creating New Documents Workaround
Posted by: tjchan on Apr 26 2007 - 1,893 views
According to Jason Langridge, users of Windows Mobile 6 Standard have a work around of the built in limitation which prohibits users from creating new documents. By creating a new Excel or Word document on a PC and then transferring this blank file over to the mobile device, one can then use "Save As…" to save to a new filename of one’s choice. With workarounds like these, Microsoft really should have just let users create new documents.
