FireFox Mobile, Fennec, Gets Alpha 2!
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Dec 28 2008 - 37 views
Well we have all been disappointed at the news that MIE 6 is not going to evolve into a patch for all windows mobile devices, but is being limited to more recent, RAM on steroids, devices. The same goes for Opera Mobile 9.5, seems you are going to have to up your investment in a device if you want a better browsing experience on your mobile device.
The Browser wars, which essentially are the result of mobile device users wanting the equivalent of a desktop, big screen experience on a rather smaller device, have stalled a bit lately.
Mozilla have an offering, Minimo, that has long been relegated to the bench. They have though, been fiddling about, with a little project, that will hopefully, bring a useable version of FireFox for Windows Mobile.
Mozilla have released the second Alpha of their Fennec browser for WinMo [where do they come up with the names?], that is a step forward towards their new mobile offering.
As Fennec development continues to move forward, the value and significance of having the complete Firefox stack in a mobile environment is becoming increasingly apparent. Developers have already started creating innovative add-ons for the new browser that increase its functionality in various ways. For example, the TwitterBar extension allows users to post to Twitter directly from the Fennec address bar. An early Fennec port of Mozilla’s Weave framework is also underway.
Ars Technica, bring a whole heap of detail to the release.
The fact is you still can’t see any better than a technical preview, unless you have a Nokia N810 tablet. Hit the link below for your under privileged preview

Press release: Xmas Freebies - SBSH Mobile Software
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Dec 27 2008 - 17 views
I recently had the chance to have a look at a new application from SBSH for WinMo called Calendar Touch, a great, customisable replacement for the native calendar on windows mobile devices.
SBSH have announced a Christmas treble icon extension pack for SBSH Calendar and Calendar Touch. For the low low price of free.
It’s a little Christmas cheer from SBSH to you, which will let you further customise the visual recognition of your categories in the program.
Visually, Calendar Touch is already impressive, but little add ons like this make all the difference.

iPhone Nano, Oh Please!!!
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Dec 25 2008 - 17 viewsUnaccustomed as I am too pointing out the ludicrous, more ridiculous, utterly obvious rumours that appear in the mobile gadget world, I have hit some sort of glass ceiling, that I have to break through on this iPhone Nano thing.
Firstly, if there is actually an iPhone Nano imminent, would you want one ?
Secondly, with the withdrawal of the great Turtleneck, from the Apple keynote at MacWorld, would any one be expecting the announcement of a new device from Apple this January?
Now I know we have seen case manufacturers and component manufacturers, leak new devices in the past, but you have to wonder at XSKN, a Chinese case manufacturer, who produce a range of iPhone skins, firstly leaking something that looks like a a smaller silicone cover, that looks similair to their iPhone range.
Now we see that the cases are available in all of there mocked up glory on the XSKIN web site.
One could conclude, that the device is real, if a company is offering a case for it, and that would probably violate a whole lot of Apple NDA clauses, wouldn’t it, and have been shut down pretty quickly, even considering the language barrier.
So why is this getting so much mileage, from heaps of sites at the moment? Slow news week, overstuffed on Christmas treats? naivety, or all of the above?
I really find myself wondering if XSKIN think they have found a great way to make their site more visible, or if they really have some inside info, at the moment I’m going with the former. The only other thing I’ll say here is have a look at the wording of the link below, I’m now going to take some time to digest the ramifications of this story, and Christmas dinner!

Android Shuffle, or is it a Quick Step?
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Dec 23 2008 - 31 views
The G1 android phone was and is a ground breaker as far as introducing the new OS from Google. Well it’s not so new now, but except for new applications developed for the OS, and lots of people joining the bandwagon, there has been little movement in the development of devices with the OS on them.
So what would you say to a T-Mobile G2 device, there has been a rumour going around for a few days now, that, is rather dubious.
Although the rumour has been discredited somewhat, and given a nice bit of photochop, still the posts come, the tenacity with which the mobile community has embraced this bit of folly, is laughable, but the other information that has surfaced because of the impetus provided by this unverifiable tidbit is rather news worthy.
It may have even spurred the bevy of news that has surfaced since it became intertube fodder.

Merry Christmas Palm – Have a $100 Million
Posted by: Heather on Dec 22 2008 - 10 views
Well, it seems that Palm received a very nice early Christmas present from Elevation Partners. They have invested another $100 million in equity in Palm. Elevation Partners is quoted as saying “We believe that Palm is in a position to transform the cell phone industry, and we are pleased to have the opportunity to make this additional investment in the company.” So, what does this mean? Honestly, I take it as a very good sign that we will have new Palm products with their new OS in the first half of the year. In these tough economic times, people are not going to invest money unless they have a sure thing. Elevation Partners must be pretty confident in Palm in order to increase their current investment. I also think this will mean an end to all the delays, and possibly the first fully touchscreen Palm phone. I am secretly hoping that it will have some kind of slide out keyboard, because I am a big fan of the keyboard. As a Palm fan, this gives me reason to cheer, and be just a little more excited about CES next month. Maybe we will even see the phone that transforms into a robot that does your laundry. A girl can dream…
