The Gadgeteer – Reviews the OQO Model 02

Daddy like…. Must Resist Urge to open wallet…

OK, now it’s time to load up on apps. I used an external DVD drive, which the OQO recognized instantly. I installed all of the apps I wanted to use, and then came the moment of truth. How long would it take to start a program? Actually, programs start right up. The 1.5 GHz VIA processor may be rated as being slower than the 1.2 GHz Pentium D on my P1510D, but the OQO is actually more responsive in opening programs. Powerpoint opened immediately. Word opened quickly. The slowest apps to open were Paint Shop Pro and Firefox, and even they opened up faster than they did on my P1510D.

HTC Shift UMPC Making

The Shift is the first UMPC to use Intel’s Ultra Mobile platform based on the Pentium M architecture.  It yields a longer battery life and better processing power.

Slashgear tested one out at the CTIA.  The Shift features an innovative Qwerty keyboard, 3G UMTS/HSDPA, Quad-Band, BT 2.0 and WiFi.

This is a picture of a preproduction unit.  No prices have been announced.  This model is due out later this year.

Thanks to JK on the Run for the info.

Who Wants To Name A UMPC??

Yes, that is correct, you can actually play a part in naming a UMPC.  Want to name it after yourself?  Fine, we’ll call it Joe.  How about Skippy?  Oh and don’t get me wrong here.  I’m not talking about the goofy nickname you call your device when you throw it in the bag in the morning.  I am talking about a whole line of UMPC devices.

It seems Clearview Technology is releasing a new UMPC soon and has been having trouble naming the darn thing.  So, rather than scratch their heads for one more second, they are tapping the creative talents of their users.

So, how do you participate?  Head over to HPC: Factor (which is co-owned by our friend, Clinton Fitch) and read the description of the device.  Then, just post a comment over there with your suggested name.  What is the prize?  Well, when you see hundreds of Daves or Lisas or Little Cherry Bunnies or whatever name you select rolling off of the assembly line, you will win bragging rights in front of the whole community.

So, get your creative juices flowing and head on over to HPC:Factor and vote for your favorite name or add one to the mix.

Sansung Q1 Ultra UMPC Pricing and Availability

The reinvigorated Q1 Ultra should appear next month in Europe.   The price should be $1200 to $1600 in US dollars.  No word yet on when it’s coming to the US.  Judging from the lukewarm reaction the original Q1, it seems that pricing it even higher would be suicide for the product.  Perhaps if it were under $1000, it would be more appealing.
