Station Break: It’s A Wonderful Life
Posted by: dgoldring on Dec 19 2008 - 8 views
Here we are in the last days before Channukah and Christmas. And I will admit that I always look forward to this time of year, because I am a huge fan of holiday movies. There are just so many good ones. But the one I love most, the one I insist upon watching every year, is probably among the oldest traditions of this season., Yes, I am talking about It’s A Wonderful Life.
Not only is this a fantastic movie, which has become an iconic part of the season, it is also the only movie to bring me to tears. I mean, really, we can all decorate our houses and light the lights. We can exchange as many gifts as you want. But nothing shows the true spirit of Christmas, at least for me, quite like the people of Bedford Falls. Here they are, in tough economic times, when they find out that George Bailey is in trouble. George (and I am oversimplifying the plot here) arrives home to find all of his friends and neighbors leaving whatever money they can spare, leaving more than enough money to pay off George’s debt. That is a kind of selflessness that rings just as true and honest today as it did over 60 years ago when the world first met George Bailey and Clarence the Angel.
Happy Chanukkah, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year to all of our readers!

Now This Is Mobile Technology! part 23
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Dec 18 2008 - 25 views
What is the trend in mobile tech that is the most dominant? Anyone? Is it hot, or is it not?
Probably the highest use of any mobile device relates to internet access, I’ve got a very low level Sammie mobile phone, but it runs a software that supports java, and hence, with 3g access on the phone, I’ve got a conduit to the intertubes. More and more of mobile users are beginning to take this for access for granted, and for many new mobile adoptee’s, it is why they go to smartphones no matter what the OS flavour.
I’m just thinking about 56 Kbps dial up right now, I think it still exists, but who would put up with it?
Well some industry bigheads got together and crunched some numbers, and the outcome reads
A survey of internet leaders, activists and analysts shows they expect major tech advances as the phone becomes a primary device for online access, voice-recognition improves, artificial and virtual reality become more embedded in everyday life, and the architecture of the internet itself improves.
So the best and most popular way to access the internet will be via mobile phone, I question that?
The fact that we have more powerful networks to access and devices that can access them seems to undermine the point that the “mobile phone” is the mover and shaker of the mobile internet world.. The 3G modem is the kicker in this story, I might check email on my phone, and see what people are posting here and do Twitter on the phone, but if I want to do anything that feels meaningful on the site I am dependant on a 3G USB modem, and a netbook. Viewing the internet is one thing, but freely, actively participating in the internet experience, still takes a bit more than a mobile phone in my opinion.
One of my thoughts here is that this is a pretty focused view with a target demographic, thus relating in the research results and conclusions. In the end, it really shows me that I’m addicted to the internet and that sort of virtual communication, so these guys are right, and wrong, and just don’t know!

Free For All, NullKeyboard
Posted by: Peter Murphy on Dec 14 2008 - 33 viewsOne of my real irks, when first using a WinMo device, was the native SIP, then you find the D-Pad, and all of a sudden you have a way to navigate through programs, and the
system with one finger. Sounds great doesn’t it. One of the things that doesn’t work with this system, is that every time you try to scroll through a web page in any browser, whether it be MIE, Opera or netfront, every time you encounter a text entry field the default SIP emerges and obscures a third or half of your display real estate.
This little application called NullKeyboard, negates the default windows mobile setting to open the SIP when a text field is encountered, whilst navigating via the D-pad.
As most Windows Mobile Devices still utilise a variation of D-Pad navigation, this free app that hasn’t been updated for quite a while, and still works with all current versions of WinMo, is a handy, annoyance allaying must in your Windows Mobile inventory.
Sometimes the best applications are the smallest, but you have to check this out if you have a long commute, and can’t get a seat on the train.

Station Break : Alalie Lilt
Posted by: khouryrt on Dec 12 2008 - 13 viewsIt’s the weekend again and time for another Station Break. This is my first one here as a contributor on JAMM so I thought I’d talk about the one song that tortured me the most as a music lover, not because it’s bad, but because it took me 18 months to find it, no kidding.
Ever had a song stuck in your head for a while, without you knowing its title or who sings it? That’s a summary of my story with Alalie Lilt’s song Flaws. I heard it a few times on the radio, got it stuck in my head and never figured out what it was. I would hear it every now and then on some local station but never have enough time to call the DJ and ask what song that was (yes, I used to do that). My usual trick when it comes to unknown songs is to write down a few sentences usually from the chorus then hit Letssingit.com, search for the lyrics and find the song. Easy peasy. In the rare instances where I don’t find the song on Letssingit, I Google search the lyrics, and always find them.
