Review: VoiceMinder from WebIS
Posted by: PatrickJ on Sep 04 2007 - 2,874 viewsVoiceMinder is a very simple program that will help you out in basic but crucial ways. It’ll keep that one truly great idea from fading away into the murky recesses of your mind in the daily madness of life. Or … just help you remember to get your car serviced this week.
Not a lot of people know this but . .. a few years back I had the idea to create a radical and elegant new portable media player device, before the iPod ever hit the shelves. It hit me while I was out and about and I never wrote it down or captured it properly - so the rest is just (negative) bank balance history for me and a win for Apple I guess.![]()
Actually, that’s completely false (like you hadn’t guessed that). My great random ideas are generally more along the lines of ‘Remember to record Jekyll on BBC America tomorrow’.
Doesn’t matter though - the thing is on any given day there are a good number of random thoughts and ideas that really want to be captured quickly and easily, so that you can act on them properly later on.
Read on to see how VoiceMinder is a great tool for just that purpose …

The Web IS Pocket Informant Review
Posted by: Judie on Jul 29 2007 - 5,242 viewsThere was a time when I used a Palm device exclusively. The PIM applications on it were so anemic, however, I was forced to find replacement programs for all of them. My favorite aftermarket software titles were DateBk, Contacts, Memo Plus, and ToDo Plus. Realizing that I felt the need to replace every single built-in PIM on my Palm device seems as funny now as it seemed necessary then, but I did it and was quite happy with the results.
When I started using a Pocket PC, I was more satisfied with the built-in PIMs than I had ever been with their Palm counterparts, but I had grown used to customizing every possible Datebook and Contact setting, and I wanted to be able to do the same on my Pocket PC. In late 2000, I tried Pocket Informant for the first time, and I liked what it allowed me to do. Don’t get me wrong, the program wasn’t perfect, but I liked it better than the competition, and it allowed much more customization than the built-in Calendar did; it even had one of the features I had liked so much in DateBk…category icons. Yeah, I was stylin’.
In June 2001, I attended the MS Mobility Tour & PPC FanFest in Dallas. While there I met Alex Kac, the developer behind the then current Pocket Informant2 version. While working the "Beam & Share" booth at the FanFest together, he and I had an opportunity to talk about what I did and didn’t like about the current incarnation of his program. Amidst the praise, one of my criticisms was that, "I had just about given up on [Pocket Informant 2] because it seemed so slow!! It really bothered me that if I made an entry it seemed to take forever for the program to refresh so that it could display the updated screen." I also groused about what I felt was a "missing" Today plugin. At the time, Alex was readying his release of PI3, and he told me that a lot of the issues I was experiencing would be addressed in that version. With the exception of the Today plugin, Alex totally came through.

Review: PhatNotes — Pens, Paper and A Whole Lot More
Posted by: dgoldring on Apr 23 2007 - 5,595 viewsSometimes you just need to jot down a quick note to help you remember an important fact. For example, you are at the library researching and the copy machine is broken. You can’t possibly memorize all of that information. So, what do you do? In olden times (circa 1995) you might have grabbed for a Post-It Note or a paper and pen. That was then…this is now. Today, you live in a paperless office. Your Pocket PC is your desktop. Of course, critical note taking software must come included with your Pocket PC Operating System. Right? I mean, it is right there…no…there…well, isn’t that interesting? One of the most important uses for a Pocket PC is jotting quick notes which can easily be reviewed, organized, and shared; and there is no native software which can handle it. Surely this must be a mistake. Surely, someone must have noticed this and corrected it. Fortunately for you, someone has noticed it…PhatWare. I have already reviewed (quite favorably I might add) PhatWare’s other offerings: PhatPad and Calligrapher. Today, I am going to take a closer look at PhatNotes and determine how well it fills this critical note taking gap in the Pocket PC.

SBSH iLauncher Gets Fixed Up, Version 3.0.03 Released
Posted by: tjchan on Feb 12 2007 - 1,149 viewsSource: solsie.com
SBSH has released a new version of iLauncher last week! Being a user of the iLauncher software since version 2, I’ve seen it evolve and expand with each new release. This minor release not only fixes some bugs but also adds a few notable features such as the new "Close All But Current" command to the Task Manager as well as beautiful new images. Also added were customization options of where certain components are installed to rather than being forced to install them to the main device memory.

Follow the jump to see all of the new features added in Version 3.0.03.

Ilium’s NewsBreak Deemed Nutty
Posted by: dgoldring on Feb 08 2007 - 1,114 views
One of my favorite things about writing for a site like JAMM is watching the software I love win awards. Recently, I had the opportunity to review Ilium’s NewsBreak, which I have long believed to be the best RSS news reader available for the Pocket PC.
Apparently, I am not the only one who feels that way, because NewsBreak was just named the February winner of the Golden Acorn Award. Way to go, NewsBreak (and, er, Ilium). Check out NewsBreak on Ilium’s website and in the JAMM Store, where it is always 15% off since it has been named a JAMM Essential Application.
