Day 2: Diary of an iPhone User Gone Treo Pro - FAIL
Posted by: Brandon Steili on Nov 07 2008 - 40 viewsEpic. Complete. Total. Fail.
So it’s now officially day two since I got the Treo Pro yesterday around mid day. Doug sent me an email a short while ago and in my response email he quickly noticed that the message: Sent from my iPhone was at the bottom of my reply. WHAT?!?! How could that be?!
Well, so far using the Treo I’ve missed three phone calls, had two SMS messages arrive at least an hour late and had more than a few dropped calls. At first I thought it might be a sim card issue - because to be honest I was using an ancient Cingular SIM card in my iPhone 3G. Since Cingular hasn’t been around for quite some time I thought maybe the Treo was taking offense to the card. So, I kept my original thoughts on posting last night at bay and drove to the AT&T store today to get a new SIM card. I can now say the the radio in the Treo Pro is officially mediocre at best. The world over has complained left, right middle and center about how much the radio in the iPhone sucketh. Well - compared to what I’m seeing on the Treo Pro radio (in my home) the failboat has really arrived. I’m now using my iPhone to get phonecalls until I figure out what is wrong (yes I’ve checked the network settings) I just can’t continue to miss phone calls.
So, here’s screen shots of each device, sitting in EXACTLY the same spot, minutes apart. - If you doubt that - look at the times and date. I couldn’t have made it very far
Yes … that’s 3G with 3 Bars on the iPhone. And ZERO bars of nothing on the Treo Pro. ZERO!!! I have to go outside of my house (which is not lined in lead) in order to get 2 bars consistently on EDGE.
FAIL.
So, Any suggestions? Anything I could be doing wrong?

Day 1: Diary of an iPhone User Gone Treo Pro - Gmail
Posted by: Brandon Steili on Nov 06 2008 - 104 views
So, simple enough task it would seem to just do something as simple as setup your gmail account to sync with Windows Mobile 6.1 which runs on the Treo. However it turns out that since Gmail went to an IMAP setup instead of the POP3 setup it had for a loooooong time, WinMo needs a little fooling before you can use IMAP.
When you first setup your account if you put in your gmail account address (example@gmail.com) WinMo is smart enough to have all the settings it thinks it needs to make the connection work. Now in truth it does have all the settings… for POP3. Problem is if you want to use IMAP there’s no way around the wizard that configures things for you. Unless you play a trick on WinMo which is what I had to do. So for those of you who have Windows Mobile 6.1 and want to use IMAP for your Gmail account - here’s the information to make that happen. For those of you who aren’t sure why this matters - here’s a bit more information on the subject.
Play this trick: when you are first prompted to enter your email address, just type in some garbage like aaa@bbb.com. Then you will not be forced to use that automatic setup wizard (POP3); instead, select IMAP as the account type, then manually type in IMAP server and SMTP server addresses as described here. After that, go back to the account settings, change your email address to the real one you use with Gmail.
Well, yes, there should be a better way of bypassing that wizard.
Update: It turns out on Windows Mobile 6, there is a box you can uncheck to disable ‘Get Settings automatically from the Internet”. On 6.1, however, no such option exisit.

Day 1: Diary of an iPhone User Gone Treo Pro
Posted by: Brandon Steili on Nov 06 2008 - 128 viewsSo, this one is going to come as a shock not only to some of you, but also to a lot of my fellow writers here at JAMM. I (self proclaimed iPhone fanboy) have received in the mail a review unit of the recently released Palm Treo Pro.
I’ve decided that since its been well over a year since I last used a WinMo device (short of for a couple minutes here and there), it might be interesting to keep track of things as I re-learn them. The iPhone has been my constant companion and I have really forgotten almost everything there was about WinMo, so much so that I found myself looking at the QuickStart guide within a couple minutes of even turning on the Treo. Not a fault of the Treo itself, but I’m really not off to a good start.
Click on through for some insight into my setup and some thoughts on what my goals are here.
