California Bans Driving and Talking without a Hands-Free Set

Posted by: tjchan on Jun 29 2008 - 155 views

text and drive

According to TechDirt, California has approved a law that will ban driving and using a cellphone without using a hands-free set. Now they are already working on a followup to ban texting while driving. Why end it there? And certainly I agree with them. People need to concentrate on driving when they are driving - not trying to read a map, texting, or even browsing their email from their iPhone. Washington’s already banned texting while driving back in May of last year. I hope that other states will follow suite. People, let’s drive while driving. Let’s not be doing other things while guiding a huge hunk of metal down the road as it could get pretty nasty.

The RazorBook400 - Windows CE Laptop

Posted by: tjchan on Jun 28 2008 - 174 views

Talking about UMPCs, yet another contender has entered the fray. This time it’s 3k’s new Razorbook400. But for $300 is this device able to do the things that a Windows XP notebook can do? Sporting a MIPS processor that runs at only 400Mhz with Windows CE, the upcoming Razorbook doesn’t sound too sharp (in my opinion from first glance) considering the rest of the specs are very similar to Asus’ Eee PC as it also has a 4Gb solid state drive and 512Mb of RAM. Software-wise, Windows CE does have software - but the number of software titles for the standard Windows platform will most certainly decimate anything that Windows CE has to offer. We’ll see if this takes off….

Also check out this photo from Laptop Mag showing the Eee PC side by side with the Razorbook (This one shown is a Linux variant):

For full specifications on the Razorbook400, checkout WindowsForDevices who may be reviewing the upcoming unit or 3k Computers, the manufacturer’s website.

Panasonic’s Mini “Toughbook”

Posted by: tjchan on Jun 28 2008 - 144 views

The world is crying out for UMPC solutions and companies like MSI, HP, Dell, and Asus have answered. Now we add yet another contender….Panasonic. Known for their ultra durable Toughbooks, the new Panasonic Intel Atom-based processor CF-U1 sports plenty of features as well as a hefty pricetag.

According to Windows For Devices the CF-U1 has features like a 32gb solid state drive (on certain models) as well as bluetooth, wireless N, and a 9 hour battery, this little bugger weighs a mere 2.3 pounds and can survive some 4 foot drops. I personally don’t care to give the little unit a drop test as acquiring one sets one back a whole 2,500 clams. At that price, I would definitely pick up an accidental damage warranty if one were available. Go check out Windows For Devices for the full details and specs of this little machine. UMPC’s…it’s the wave of the future!

Ringo Gets More Jingle!

Posted by: tjchan on Jun 28 2008 - 177 views

ringo

A couple of months ago, I reviewed an excellent program called Ringo. For those of you who have never heard of this superb program, let me tell you a little about it. Ringo allows you to use any MP3 file as a ringtone! Cool eh? Yep, that means you can have the Imperial March playing or R2D2 tooting away when your friends call. But that’s only the beginning, as you can set up rings for each person or even groups. Ringo already came with a large number of ringtones, but now it even comes with more with a mix of Classical, Country, Funky, Rock, Salsa and Ragtime.

Versions of Ringo are available for users of BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and Palm OS/Access smartphones. Ringo gives smartphone users an attractive and easy-to-use interface for playing their own MP3 music as ringtones and message tones on their phone, as well as making personal and group call tones easy to set up and maintain. Give Ringo a try today and spice up your mobile life!
