What is causing Dell laptop batteries to explode? Is my battery at risk?

Posted by: Steve on Aug 21 2006 - 963 views

Tracy V. Wilson over at HowStuffWorks.com just wrote up an article explaining how and why those Dell laptop batteries are spontaneously combusting. Her final verdict is that

"There are several reasons why multiple laptop battery models have been recalled in the past few years. People want small, lightweight laptops that they can use for long periods. They also want their laptops to have bright screens and lots of processing power. For these reasons, laptop batteries have to be relatively small, but they also have to hold a lot of energy and last a long time.

Making lithium-ion batteries that can hold more power for a longer period requires vital components, including the separators, to be small and thin. The reduction in size makes it more likely that the batteries can fail, break, leak or short circuit. "

It looks as if all small batteries with a lot of power are prone to spontaneous combustion breaking/failing.

Open source to overtake Windows Mobile?

Posted by: Steve on Aug 20 2006 - 814 views

A recent IDC study hypothesizes that Open Source type software is set on a course to take over the majority of the software market. Seeing how many phone developers are transiting over to a Linux based platform and how Palm is moving over to a Linux based OS, is it possible that Linux will overtake the mobile market? James Kendrick and Kevin Tofel recently said in their podcast, MobileTechRoundup #64, how stable Linux is on a mobile device and how great it would be to have constant community releases in order to correct bugs and add functionality to the OS. Companies such as TrollTech envisioned just this and charged into the market head first with the release of their GreenPhone. Although the TrollTech phone isn’t intended for the end-user, the very concept of having a Linux based open source operating system on a mobile device  implies that having an open source operating system is cheaper to maintain for the company and easier to update for the end-user.  How will operating systems such as Windows Mobile compete when OEM’s are able to utilize Open Source software for a much lower price compared to the cost of licensing Windows Mobile?

" The study, which analyzed IDC surveys from over 5,000 developers in 116 countries, finds the use of open source is increasing at a such a rate that it represents the most significant all-encompassing and long-term trend that the software industry has seen since the early 1980s.

IDC believes that open source will eventually play a role in the life-cycle of every major software category, and will fundamentally change the value proposition of packaged software for customers." says the CDN staff in their article, The real impact of open source.

Personally I haven’t used a mobile device running Linux. But I have heard many great things about devices such as the Archos, Nokia 770, and Sharp Zaurus. Everyday Linux enthusiasts work to put the Open Source OS onto Windows Mobile Devices. The day that OEM’s recognize the benifits of Linux is the day that Windows Mobile is replaced by Open Source.

Gentlemen, Start your Axims…It’s FRAGGING TIME

Posted by: Steve on Aug 10 2006 - 969 views

First we have eye candy from Nokia, now we have eye candy from Aspyr. These screenshots of Call of Duty 2 for the PPC is just, WOW. I almost regret letting go of my X50v and x51v. (Almost. Because if I still had them, I wouldn’t be able to get a single thing done.)

Wishlist:

  • Decent framerate
  • Online Multiplayer (with people actually playing all the time)
  • Good controls
  • An X50v(X51v) to actually play it on

Anyone here willing to lend me their Axim to test run this game? :-D

Click the link below for more eye pleasing Call of Duty for the 2700g on the x50(x51)v

Converge this. Camera + Phone = Nokia N73

Posted by: Steve on Aug 10 2006 - 1,615 views

When my friend showed me the photos taken with the Nokia N73 I told him, "You’ve got to be kidding me." The 3.2 Megapixel sensor and Carl Zeiss optics combined in the hands of Nokia just make wonders happen. Nokia’s new N73 Smartphone is just phenomenal. The specs are basically standard for the high end Nokia’s. I’ll just quickly list them and then move on to the best part about this phone/camera.

  • GSM Quad Band
  • QVGA Screen
  • 3.2 Megapixel Camrea
  • VGA front mounted camera for video conference
  • miniSD
  • Bluetooth 2.0+ EDR
  • FM Radio

Moving on…

The Camera. Just look at these photos and then comment.

Sony’s new “Wireless Communicator”

Posted by: Steve on Aug 08 2006 - 561 views

Sony has just announced this slick looking "Communicator" device. Armed with a Qwerty Keyboard, 802.11b, 2.4" Color LCD at 320X240, Internal Memory of 1GB, a Li-ion battery (45 hours on music, 7 hours of chatting, and 3 hours of Skype), and expandable memory via Memory Stick Duo. While it doesn’t hold any sort of cellular radio inside, the Mylo argues that with

the abundance of Wifi in the world, who needs a cellular radio. Mylo comes pre-installed with JiWire’s hotspot directory, which lists over 20,000 open WiFi networks in the US. Also included is a copy of Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger, and Skype.

Sony’s Mylo can also handle audio files such as MP3, Atrac, and WMA files. A unique feature that Sony incorporated into Mylo is the ability to automatically share your playlist with nearby Mylos. "When you come into range of other mylo users, your mylo will detect their presence and form a personal network so that you can share playlists and stream music." Says Amber Maitland over at Pocket-Lint.co.uk

Apparently this Mylo is bundled with a microphone, stereo headphones, a USB cable, and a case, all for $350. I’m not sure where the market is for this device since you can pick up an HTC Wizard/Apache for that price and the HTC can do so much more. Results to be seen….
