Aliph’s Jawbone 2 Spotted

Posted by: PatrickJ on Apr 15 2008 - 1,415 views

Aliph Jawbone 2

The Aliph Jawbone has been one of the most popular and well-received Bluetooth headsets on the market for a long time now.  The only major complaints about it have been to do with a reportedly very flaky charger connector and its rather bulky size factor.

Last week Engadget spotted some details and even a pic (seen above) of the Jawbone 2.  Apparently the new model has just made it past the FCC and will be arriving ’soon’.

The new model just broke through the FCC’s surly bonds in full visual glory, showing a headset that maintains the distinctive industrial design of the original while getting just a bit smaller and adopting a new connector that looks moderately less sketchy.

It’s hard to tell in that photo, but it doesn’t seem a whole lot smaller to me.  Sticking with the same, very distinctive, design seems a good call to me though - and if the connector turns out to be more reliable, that’s got to be a good thing.

2007 Engadget Awards - Winners Announced

Posted by: PatrickJ on Apr 15 2008 - 256 views

Engadget Awards symbol

Engadget has announced the winners of their 2007 Engadget Awards, which cover a broad range of gadgets and consumer electronics - from Cellphone of the Year to HDTV, Robot and Wireless Device or Technology of the Year.  There are also two awards in each category - a Readers’ Choice and and Editors’ Choice.

The Apple Fanboys accusations are already in full swing for this one, as quite a few Apple products cleaned up in both the Readers’ Choice and Editors’ Choice categories - inlcuding the iPod Touch, a couple of Mac computers, and the iPhone scooping both the Gadget of the Year and the Most Anticipated Gadget of 2008, for the 3G version (in both cases, it got the readers and editors award).

Other notable award winners included:

  • The Amazon Kindle for Handheld of the Year (Editors) - this one surprised me as I thought its reception had been distinctly lukewarm
  • The Ugobe Pleo - took both Readers and Editors awards for Robot of the Year
  • Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite - again swept both awards for Game Console of the Year

Check out the full awards listing, and the very heated debate in the comments, at:

I Think A Change, A Change …

Posted by: PatrickJ on Apr 14 2008 - 270 views

New JAMM masthead

Would do us good.

Yup - your eyes are not playing tricks on you - we’re at it again - changing the JAMM site theme tonight.  Normally we would not like to be changing our look again this soon, but we’ve had some troublesome issues with the previous theme that made doing this an urgent priority.

We’ve carried out the change pretty much at the drop of a hat, so I’m sure we’ll need to be modifying the new theme and layout, and making all sorts of adjustments for a good little while now.  None of this should require any site downtime - so we hope you’ll bear with us while we tidy things up.

In the end, we hope JAMM will look better and be more enjoyable to browse around.    Oh, and we’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions on the new theme in the comments.

Thanks for your patience …

Good Idea: AppToDate - Windows Mobile Software Updater

Posted by: PatrickJ on Apr 10 2008 - 1,388 views

Here’s a great and overdue idea, that hopefully will take off.  Modaco have released a beta of their new AppToDAppToDateate application - which is a generic software updater tool for Windows Mobile.  The idea is that, as AppToDate gains support, you shoudl no longer need to worry about keeping track of updates to each of your individual programs via publisher newsletters or sites (or other similar methods), but could simply use this one app to handle staying on top of *all* updates for you.

This is one of the things that works very well in the iPhone ‘jailbreak’ arena right now - there is a program called Installer that is a single, easy source to use for acquiring new programs - and it automatically keeps you informed about updates to all of your installed apps.  Hmmm, wonder whether this tool will ever try to cut over and support new installs as well?

In any case, if this app gets good support from the Windows Mobile developer community, it should be one heck of a useful tool for users.

Read on for details on how you can get started with AppToDate, as a developer or an end user …
