Verizon’s Treo 700wx Getting Upgraded to WM6.0
Posted by: danc on Jun 25 2008 - 145 viewsNot long ago this would have been HUGE news in my home.
According to a post on PocketPC Thoughts Verizon may soon be offering a firmware upgrade to WM6.0 for the Treo 700wx. While WM 6.0 apparently isn’t as tasty as WM 6.1, it still a nice bump up since it includes, among other things, support for Office 2007 and Voice command over Bluetooth.
According to the post the timeframe is "Spring and Summer". Since spring has officially come and gone I guess the time frame is now "Summer and Summer".
Alas (yeah I actually wrote "Alas" in a blog post) while this WOULD have been big news in my home in the not too distant past, that time is, well, past. Verizon has long been banished in favor of AT&T and my wife finally gave up her Treo last week.
If you are on Verizon and have a Treo 700wx, however, keep your eyes out for a nice summer surprise.

PlumChoice Extends Virtual Support To Smartphones– Good Value?
Posted by: danc on Jun 24 2008 - 161 views![]()
PlumChoice describes itself as "The Ultimate Technology Service Experience". They offer virtual tech support over the phone/internet 7 days a week, 24 hours a day by taking over a client’s PC to diagnosis and repair issues.
It is a great concept for a business since it means consumers no longer need to bring equipment in for repair or bring a technician out to their homes if the problem is software-based.
This is something a lot of us already do for friends and family for free. I never thought about trying to make a living off of it but now that I think about it… In the past months I have set up Macs for my mother and my mother-in-law, my wife and my brother-in-law, and three co-workers. Moreover I maintain (with their permission, of course) the ability to remotely log-in to their computers when tweaks and adjustments are needed. It sure beats trying to talk them through it or going to their homes.
PlumChoice announced today that they are extended their remote tech support for Macs & Mobile Devices. They are offering two smartphone setup packages:
Smartphone QuickStart Basic provides installation of PC software required to sync data between the PC and the handheld as well as instruction in the synchronization process. It costs $49.95.
Smartphone QuickStart Premium provides the Basic setup service plus remote training in the use of the smartphone itself. For example, PlumChoice technicians connect remotely to show users how to perform functions ranging from retrieving email to selecting ringtones, downloading music and surfing the mobile Web. It will cost $59.95.
So the question is- Is this a good value or the rip-off of the week?

EverNote Emerges From Beta- Adds Premium Option
Posted by: danc on Jun 24 2008 - 194 views
I was more than a bit surprised to discover that the amazing web application, Evernote, just came out of Beta.
Why? Because I had all but forgotten that Evernote was IN Beta.
For months now I have been using it seamlessly on my iMac , my MacBook Air and my iPhone to store and access all kinds of information and I haven’t had so much as a blip in its function. It certainly didn’t FEEL like a Beta to me and now it isn’t.
Evernote is all grown up and better than ever. It is by far one of my favorite applications/services for storing and organizing notes, emails, pictures and more. And as Doug reminded me earlier, you can even "Jott" to it.
(Yes, "Jott" has become a verb. "I am Jotting." "I will Jott." "I Jotted.")
So is Evernote coming out of Beta good news or bad news?

Quick Review: Beyza Cases’ “Thinvelop” For MacBook Air
Posted by: danc on Jun 23 2008 - 1,417 viewsI’ve always been partial to high quality, leather device cases. They not only protect delicate electronics well, but they protect them beautifully, too. So when Beyza Cases announced their "Thinvelope" Leather Case for the MacBook Air it caught my eye.

I’ve been carrying my MacBook Air with me pretty much everywhere since I first got it a few months ago and the Thinvelope looked like an awfully nice way to carry the super-light MacBook in a super-spiffy way.

Then a month later “gadget goddess” Judie Lipsett over at Gear Diary reviewed it. It was a funny turn of events that led to it, since Judie actually had the Thinvelope BEFORE she had the MacBook Air. But there she was with the MBA and Thinvelope in hand. Did Judie like it? Well, her review of the Beyza case ended with–
What Needs Improvement: Nothing
High praise from my friend who knows gadgets and gadget accessories better than just about anyone else.
Well, thanks to Judie, I’ve had the chance to see and use one of the cases first hand and all I can say is- WOW! It is one beautiful leather case!
