One Mobile Post Deserves Another
Posted by: danc on Jul 30 2008 - 18 viewsSo this is a post created using the Wordpress-specific app for mobile blogging. It is a good example of a free app not only being almost as good as a paid app but kicking its butt.
Why?
Well let’s see…
Wordpress let’s you add tags
Wordpress let’s you see and select your site’s categories.
Wordpress’ text edit is much easier to use and especially to make corrections because the scrolling is much smoother.
And Wordpress is FREE!
Yes, it only does Wordpress but did I mention… It is FREE!
EDIT: At the same time though, as Brandon pointed out, BlogWriter has a built-in RSS reader which can big a big help. Still, the ease of use of the Wordpress iPhone app has me sold and when the iPhone gets a really good camera it will be even better.

Mobile Blogging iPhone-style

GeoTagged, [N41.34854, E74.95761]
Doug, Brandon and I are all trying out BlogWriter tonight to get a taste of what mobile bloggging is like.
Setting up BlogWriter was quick once we got the right settings. Unfortunately the app didn’t set the account info automatically and
we had to hunt around for it. From there though it was easy.
The app uses images from the photo album and allows to easily add simple text. The auto save feature is nice too.
It will also geotag the image.
It is a bit pricey at $10 but it does work!
EDIT: You might notice the presence of a geotag at the top but no picture. I used the same picture from my iPhone for both this and the post above it. BlogWriter was not able to post the image but Wordpress Mobile was.

iPhone Apps We REALLY Want To See- NewsBreak
Posted by: danc on Jul 29 2008 - 89 views
Since making the move from Windows Mobile to the iPhone last August I have not missed a whole lot.
There is, however, one app I would really really really love to see make its way from Windows Mobile to the iPhone. The name of the app? NewsBreak.
Newsbreak is, by far, the best RSS reader available for Windows Mobile. I started using it back when it was first in beta and swore by it as it became increasingly powerful with each new version. Nothing could/can hold a candle to it. (You can read Doug’s review here.)
NewsBreak’s developers, Ilium did a fantastic job with it and I, for one, would love to see it ported to the iPhone. Read more »

iStanford?

A quick look at Stanford’s fall course list offers a bit more proof that the iPhone is the next great computing platform.
The course “iPhone Application Programming” is innocently titled enough but then again, when was the last time you heard of a university offering a course entitled “Treo Application Programming” or “Programming For WM 101″??? To me it is further confirmation that everything we have seen in the past year is just the beginning!
According to the school catalog the course is being taught by Paul Marcos. Paul, a long time Apple employee and seasoned programmer, worked on the OS X Mail app and was on the team for both the first and second generation iPhones.
With developers still under an Apple NDA it will be interesting to see what Paul is and isn’t allowed to share- although in light of Apple’s tight control we’ll never know that latter part, will we?

Review: Plantronics Voyager 855 Bluetooth Headset
Posted by: danc on Jul 27 2008 - 263 viewsBluetooth headsets have become commonplace now that an increasing number of US states are (finally) making it illegal to use a cellphone while driving without a hands free device. They have become so commonplace, in fact, that a standout headset is rare.
The Plantronics Voyager 855 Bluetooth headset I have had the opportunity to use over the past few weeks is such a standout. Read more »

Off Topic But On Point: Professor Randy Pausch’s “Last Lecture”
Posted by: danc on Jul 25 2008 - 38 views
Rob Bushway of GottaBeMobile put up a post a bit ago that Carnegie Mellon computer science Professor Randy Pausch died today after a fight with cancer.
Rob linked to Pausch’s “Last Lecture” and I have been watching it for the past hour.
Rarely have I seen a man who combined wisdom, humor and story-telling in such a powerful way.
It is far too easy to lose sight of the fact that the amazing mobile tech we so love doesn’t just appear. It is created by individuals with vision, dreams and imagination. Clearly Professor Pausch was one of the best.
If you haven’t seen it here is the link to Rob’s post and the lecture it is worth the 1:16 minutes.
