So, you think paying $400 for an iPhone is too much?

How about buying a Motorola DynaTAC 8500XL for $2,500? Of course that price was in 1988, so with inflation, we’re looking at $4,382 for this 28 ounce wonder with 1 hour of talk-time. Yup, you heard me right 1 hour of talk time.
The Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, introduced in 1984, was the world’s first truly portable cell phone (as opposed to a car phone) that didn’t require a mobile operator to connect a call. It was a 10-inch tall brick — not something you’d carry in your pocket — and it sold for $3,995. Nonetheless, its popularity took off among real estate agents, stockbrokers — and drug dealers.
The cellular telephone is just an example of how much technology has changed, and the amount of money we are willing to spend to get it. Check out this great article on tech.msn.com by Becky Waring of PC world, as she takes us back to 1988.

Uncle Bill, not the richest man in the world anymore.
Posted by: Aczon on Mar 05 2008 - 442 viewsOkay, he’s not my uncle, but I wouldn’t mine a bit if he calls me his nephew. After reigning as the richest man in the world for a measly 13 years, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is now ranked No. 3 in the world. Gates, who is now ONLY worth $58 billion, is trailing Warren Buffet, and Carlos Slim Helu for the title, richest man.
He is up $2 billion from a year ago and would have been perhaps as rich — or richer — than Buffett had Microsoft not made an unsolicited bid for Yahoo (YHOO, news, msgs) at the beginning of February. (Microsoft is the publisher of MSN Money.)
What’s more amazing is the fact that Bill Gates is actually 2 billion richer from a year ago, and still came in third. Head over to MSN Money.com for the complete list of billionaires. I tried to look for Doug on the list, but so far I’m still looking.
