Looking for Droids?

Someone whispered in Boy Genius’ ear that not one, but TWO Android phones may be released by Verizon on November 6th. These are the long awaited Motorola Droid and the HTC Droid Eris. It still seems somewhat unclear as to what the Motorola phone may be called, as latest rumors seem to have the entire Verizon Android lineup being referred to as “Droid”.

The Motorola definitely seems to be a power device as shown in BGR’s previous preview, but just as interestingly, the HTC Eris appears like it might just be Verizon’s version of the Hero, running the HTC Sense UI in all its glory.

We’ll be very curious to see the full reviews start pouring in along with consumer’s reactions to these exciting devices!

Eclair in the air?

The Boy Genius Report has come through again with a most magnificent post that tickles our fancies in two ways… one for the Android lover that exists (or is at least building) in all of us… and the other for those who claim that Verizon STILL has the worst smartphones out there.

They’ve just posted a fairly incredible Android 2.0 screenshot walkthrough that goes into great detail about all new features and capabilities for the new Eclair version of Android… and don’t think that we didn’t notice that it was on a Verizon phone, probably the Motorola Sholes/Tao/Droid/Whatchamacallit… can’t wait to hear more about the actual hardware as they hint at the end.

Enjoy!

One Standard to Rule Them All?

microUSB

Last summer we heard that a European commission had agreed, in conjunction with major phone manufacturers, to set a ‘standard’ charging interface in motion for cellphones, namely the micro-USB connector. Today, Engadget Mobile is reporting that the CTIA is now contributing to the fray by declaring that micro-USB definitely is the standard to move forward with but also by adding the 3.5mm audio plug onto the list of ‘must-haves’ for phone manufacturers. (Take that HTC with your extUSB!) They’ve declared January 2012 as the date of effectiveness, which seems so far away…. yet I definitely look forward to the day when I only need one type of charger. Well, one type for my phone anyway, forget about my camera and other necessities!

There be Dragons here!

Engadget Mobile is reporting an update on the rumored HTC Dragon Android phone. The device is thought to run the… wait for it… SnapDRAGON 1GHz processor. There isn’t a whole lot to offer on this update, just a few screenshots, but it looks to be running the HTC Sense UI, which is good, at a resolution of 800×480, which is also good. We’ll be looking for more information as it becomes available and will be sure to pass it along.

Android Community is reporting here that Verizon and Google are scheduled for a joint press conference this morning at 10:00 Eastern Time. The article suggests that this could be the announcement of the long-sought first Android phone for Verizon, most likely the Motorola Sholes/Droid. If so, this would be a major step for Verizon, definitely a welcome one for power-users! Tune in for further details as we learn them.
