FreedomPop–The Internet is a Right Not a Privilege

Have you ever been told to go “Google it” and you can’t because of a lack of a data plan or a nearby WiFi hotspot?  Well, gone are those days as a company called FreedomPop begins to hit mainstream.

The company was founded back in 2011 and is backed by Skype founder Niklas Zennstorm’s Atomico, Mangrove Capital, and DCM.  Through an innovative model, FreedomPop is able to offer customers with 500MB of free high speed internet each month (1GB for those using the Freedom Hub Burst)…and will help to ensure that no American is left off the digital grid.

Currently, the ticket to free internet is the cost of whichever hardware device that you choose.  At the time of this writing, the pricing is as follows plus $6.99-$8.99 shipping:

Freedom Spot – Overdrive Pro
Price $39.99
500MB of bandwidth free per month.
What makes this one different than the Photon is the ability for 3G and 4G.  Granted only 4G speeds have a free allowance and an additional fee of $3.99 a month is needed for 3G coverageYou can always switch back to 4G only.  Getting this will give you the most versatility.
To get this particular device, you’ll need to click on the link that says “Nationwide 4G & 3G” on the FreedomPop page.

Note: This option is not available via the referral program.

freedom-stick-bolt-001

Freedom Stick – Bolt
Price $39.00
500MB of bandwidth free per month.
This limits you to only a single computer – Why would I want to do that, when having one of the Photon or Overdrive Pro would allow me to connect up my iPads and even my laptop at the same time!

The total cost of ownership (TCO) to be around $50-$110 (rounding up) for 500MB of free internet access each month for as long as they offer it.

Now there are a few things to watch out for or you will be charged additional

and finally, your bandwidth is use it or lose it.  You could pay $4 for roll over but I don’t think that’s very economical.  It is your duty to use at least 5MB of data each month or you will be charged $0.99 as an inactivity fee.

Finally, just a final few words about this potentially wonderful service.  You can share 50MB of data with your friends at a time should they run out.  You can also gain additional data by completing sponsored offers or referring people.

Overall this offering holds plenty of potential.  I’ve always dreamed of being able to get mobile data…in which this is now a reality.  I can’t wait to receive my Freedom Overdrive Pro and give this service a test drive.

Full Disclosure:  This article contains referral links to FreedomPop which grants me 50MB of additional bandwidth per month should you sign up using it.  The equipment was purchased by myself.  I haven’t had the chance to use the service yet as I’m waiting for my own FreedomPop Overdrive Pro to be shipped to me. I wrote this article myself.  It expresses my own opinions.  I am not receiving any compensation for it.  I have the relationship of customer with the company that is mentioned in this article.
