GPS Setup with Garmin Nuvi 265 – How to Avoid the Toll Roads and Potentially Costly Fines
I had an emergency job last night in which I followed my GPS rather than a previously planned route thinking I was safer with the GPS. Instead of the straight path…I went on a very winding one which took me to the Addison Tunnel (A toll road). I got to the toll booth which was green for the one that was full service / makes change at around 8:30pm and I had to decide what to do because I was facing the big stop light and no one was at the booth. The change machine there happened to be out of order with a big sign taped to it. With no cash, what was I going to do? After waiting for about 5-8 mins. trying to decide what to do, I finally ran the toll booth in which case bells went off and everything. So much for that. After a bit of research this morning, I found out how to avoid such predicaments. Read on to find out how!
When you first turn on your Garmin Nuvi 265 (these directions may be similar with other Garmin models). You’ll get this screen:
Press the “Tools” button on the lower right hand corner.
Next press the “Settings” button which has a picture of a wrench.
Then press the “Navigation” button on the upper right.
You’ll get this screen next where you’ll be able to click on the “Enabled” button under “Avoidances”. This will give you the next screen where you can choose what to avoid – including toll roads!
That’s it! Now you can tweak your GPS to not take you through embarrassing situations at the toll booth.

Thank you very much for this! I cannot stand the thought of another overpriced toll fee for nothing! I’ll drive 2hrs out of the way to avoid a greedy state toll!

Thank you so much! I usually don’t have cash on me (just my debit card) and it really gets me to be suddenly and unexpectly facing a toll plaza or in one case a $10 ferry ride and a 30 minute wait.
