Question of the Day: What online collaboration tools do you use?

Today’s question revolves around online collaboration.   What tools are at your disposal?  For us here at JAMM, we use Google Calender and GMail.  So far, these work for the most part, but there are some gaps.

For my personal collaboration, Dropbox is also hugely useful, if for no other reason that making sure files are up to date for everyone.

What tools do you use?   Share your thoughts with us below.

We are all being programmed to not stand in one place for too long, usually meaning more than a few seconds. I’m referring to our use of and formed habits via technology. If you are a daily tech user (anything from a smartphone, to a desktop computer, to a portable one of some kind), you probably access your news and information from emails and feed readers. And this means the tendency becomes to do those things with as much brevity and alacrity as you can muster. The end result being, you fly thru the information as though someone had erected a “No Parking” sign. Rare is the person, these days, who sits with a cup of coffee and actually reads a whole article in a relaxed manner.

There are internet browser plug-ins that can offer some alternatives to this manic life style –- the Firefox extension Read it Later comes to mind, but what if you don’t use Firefox. And what if you have an iPhone or iPad as your daily driver. Well, you now have a beautifully designed and very useful answer to questions like: “how can I save this,” “where did I see that,” “where did I put that?” It is called Instapaper. Instapaper takes any web page, minus all the frustrating ads and extras, and converts and saves your article into a newspaper-like format for reading at a later time. Two versions are available, Free and Pro ($4.99), thru the App Store.

How it works

Instapaper gives you a Read Later bookmark.

  1. When you find something you want to read, but you don’t have time, click Read Later.
  2. Come back when you have time, or read your articles on the go.

Try Instapaper Free first if you’d like a taste of offline page reading, then buy Instapaper Pro for its versatility, convenience, and features.

Does your Blackberry suffer from signal issues ala iPhone 4? Maybe this app can tell you!

Antenna Meter has just been released by Xtreme Labs and Fixmo.  The app attempts to provide a means of either proving or disproving Steve Jobs and Apple’s claims that the Blackberry Bold, among other devices, suffer from reception and antenna problems similar to what the iPhone 4 does.

While using the app, one is supposed to try out different grips on the phone, while the signal strength is boldly displayed for easier determination of whether holding it a specific way actually causes signal loss.

If you have a Blackberry and want to try out this application, we’d love to know your results!

Question of the Day: Netbooks or tablets – which is for you?

Today’s question is whether you find the idea of netbooks tablets more practical for on the go computing?   I can see advantages to both.  The tablet would be practical for the solid device meaning no keyboard to manage, however this also seems the downfall to me.  Data input without a dedicated keyboard is tedious at best for large amounts of text.
