Question of the Day: If you are a Windows Mobile or Android user, is your ROM stock or cooked?

Question of the Day:  If you are a Windows Mobile or Android user, is your ROM stock or cooked?

At present, my Touch Pro is running the stock Windows Mobile 6.1, although it is heavily tweaked for my liking.  Previous devices have had cooked ROMs installed and a part of me is starting to want to explore my options for upgrading.

What’s your experience / preference in this area?  Let us know in the comments below.

Where Are We Headed?

image

I’ve always been an application-junkie with every WinMo device I’ve ever owned, but I have to admit I’ve never liked the way each device eventually gets bogged-down and needed to start over from too many installs or conflicts. It has always bugged me, so I have watched with interest as applications and development began to move toward “cloud-based” use. The other development that has fascinated me is the growth of Android and the iPhone native applications in the handheld arena, which brought along with it a whole argument/conversation about Flash and it’s future.

Today I found what I think is a pretty interesting perspective and summary by Ryan Stewart, who is an Adobe developer. Whether you agree with him or not, I think it’s an interesting and timely read. It also gives a nice explanation as to the distinctions between some of these terms and perspectives of various companies and camps.Check out his thoughts and tell JAMM what you think. Read it HERE.

HanDBase for iPhone Updates

image image

If you are familiar with HanDBase you already know it is a fast and light database manager for desktop and handheld devices. It allows you to create your own databases or select from a huge gallery of templates, all with the ability to sync between your device and desktop. Today they have announced an update for the new iOS4 iPhone. This is what they say about it:

With the release of iOS4 (formerly iPhone OS4), the iPhone now supports various forms of multitasking.  We’ve done our work and updated HanDBase to support this, and submitted the update to Apple.  As you can imagine, with 225,000+ apps in the App Store, it’s likely they have a huge backlog of apps to review right now.  But hopefully the 4.6.5 update will be approved and live in the store soon!
Multitasking support is not all that’s new with this version.  There is a whole list of new features and bug fixes including:

  • Supports fast app switching in iOS4
  • Supports sharing of database files via iTunes (under the Apps section under a device that is connected)
  • Supports opening PDB file attachments in email and in other applications.  In fact, if the database already exists in HanDBase, the attachment will be merged/synced with the database already existing!
  • iPhone4 optimized Hi-res program icon and splash screen
  • Auto save: Previously databases were only saved when you closed the database back to the Choose database (or parent database).  Now they are saved automatically in the background.
  • Direct editing of fields in the Edit Record screen- no more jumping to another screen to edit

Available from the App Store for $9.99
