Unlikely Benefit of iPhone 4′s Higher Resolution – Better App Display on iPad

What you are seeing above is a display mockup provided by www.make-coffee-.net.  The authors of Make Coffee, an app that turns your iPhone into a virtual coffee machine, is in the process of updating their program to version 2.  In the process of updating to version 2, they are working through making the display optimized for iPhone 4 devices.

Previous iPhone’s displays were 320 pixels by 480 pixels.  As of iPhone 4, displays will have a resolution of 640 x 960 pixels, making the overall resolution much closer to what is featured on the iPad.

Now, look at the diagram below.  The center black rectangle illustrates what a native iPhone app, pre-iPhone 4, looks like on the iPad without scaling.  The larger white rectangle illustrates what the iPhone 4 larger resolution will display as on an iPad without the help of scaling.  For reference the outer gray box represents the iPad screen.

Now check out an actual screenshot from Make Coffee 2.  This is the native iPhone 4 version displayed full size, without scaling, on an iPad.  Pretty impressive!
