Question of the Day: What Is Your Preferred Means of Communication?

Question of the Day:  What is your preferred means of communication?

Used to be, if someone wanted to get in touch with you they had to meet with you face to face.  Then came the writing of a letter, from horseback to postal carrier and next in the line, the telephone.  We had landlines and party lines.  Then there were cordless phones, gigantic (at least by today’s standards) cell phones and car phones.  We were blessed with email and instant messaging.  Now we have texting, Facebook, Twitter and so on.  It seems that there are countless ways that you can get in touch with someone, rather be it for a quick “hello” or a full blown conversation.  Ushering in with each new wave of technology, we are saddled with one or seven more ways to contact someone, and for them to contact us.

Of these methods, what are your preferred means of communication?  If you can find me in person, I’ll talk to you… especially over a glass of iced tea.  You can call my cell phone and I’ll (likely) answer.  I send text messages to my wife, and occasionally a family member, but not everyone that texts me gets a response.  You can email me.  It’s my preferred method.  You won’t find me, however, on Facebook at all, as I just don’t understand it.  I’ve posted about two things to Twitter since getting my account, both stating something along the lines of “Hello World”.  Am I able to be contacted for communications?  Sure.  By every means available.  No.

What are your thoughts on this?  How accessible are you, and via what means?

Tips ‘n’ Tricks: Use GMail As An Exchange Server With Windows Mobile

Android is having a great success, and people tell me they are very pleased of the ease of setup of Google service, e.g. GMail, Calendar and Contacts. They are right, but remember that your Windows Mobile device can take full advantage of these Google services, too.

post

Remember to make a backup of your data before proceeding, just in case.

To explain this to you, I will use the detailed Google Mobile guide available here, complete with figures, as using the screenshots of an Italian localized device would be less clear :)

Open the default Email program on your Windows Mobile device and choose to setup a new Microsoft Exchange account. Enter “m.google.com” as the server address and select for the SSL encryption.

Select “Next” on the bottom and setup your account.
Insert your Google account, complete with the domain, in the “User name” field and your password in the “Password”field.  Select to save the password and leave the “Domain” field empty.

Click “Next” and then choose what information you want to sync. You will be able to choose your GMail account, Contacts and Calendar. Remember not to choose Tasks, as they are not supported and will prevent you to successfully sync with the Google server.

Click “Finish” and press sync to start syncing.

That’s it! Your GMail account, including the Contacts therein and all meetings in Google Calendar, will now sync seamlessly with your WM device and back.

Launching “ActiveSync” you will have also the chance to fine tune this feature choosing “Menu/Schedule…”, including an option to sync the new elements as soon as they change. This way, you will be notified of new emails on your GMail account as soon as they arrive, BlackBerry style!

Please, remember you will need a proper data plan to take full advantage of this feature.

Question of the Day: What Do You Do With Old Technology?

Question of the Day: What do you do with your old technology?

Some recycle, some recycle creatively.  I’ve seen my students use an old computer monitor for the head of a sculpture.  Others have used old televisions as the surface for a painting as well as old CD players brought to life while integrated into a new item.

What are your experiences with old technology?  Do you let them sit around accumulating dust?  Do you incorporate them into art?  Do you sell or commit to the landfill?  Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
