Sprint’s Fumble of the NFL Mobile App Leads to A Pick Six From Verizon

It was one of Sprint’s big coup’s.  They had exclusive access to the National Football League with their NFL mobile app, which comes preloaded on many of their handsets and mobile devices.  Until now.  From out of nowhere, Verizon made a bold offensive play (rumored to follow a tune of roughly $700 million), and locked mobile access to the NFL Network’s new  Red Zone channel.  This is the mobile companion to the NFL Network’s new Red Zone (www.redzonetv.nfl.com)

I have always been a pretty big fan of Sprint’s NFL mobile app, which brings live scoring updates and audio broadcasts, along with plenty of other features.  This all seems scant, however, when compared with the NFL Network’s Red Zone channel, which will feature:

  • live streaming of Sunday Night and Thursday Night games
  • full Fantasy Football stats
  • Live streaming of the 2010 NFL Draft
  • Video and analysis on demand

And, of course, pretty much everything Sprint offers with its NFL mobile app.   I have to say that I am impressed by some of the moves Verizon has been making lately.  They took AT&T head-on rather successfully with their “There’s a map for that” ads, and now they are aiming straight for the heart of Sprint’s mobile app package.

No word yet on pricing or availability, but I imagine that information will be coming soon, since Verizon plans to launch in time for the NFL Draft, which is coming up pretty quickly.

Three Cheers for Verizon. I’m so glad that they are going to take over NFL on a mobile level. I can’t begin to tell you how frustrating it has been trying to access NFL’s mobile site without all the Sprint garbage cluttering the scene.

I fully agree that Verizon has been making some great progress moving forward – can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings us!

It is rumored that Sprint is going to be coming out with their own new Sprint football app, to compete with Verizon’s new offerings. We will have to wait and see what Sprint offers its subscribers in the coming months.
