Apple – King of Promotion?

Let me start by saying that I have always been a PC girl.  In grad school, I had a traumatic Mac experience.  My department loved Macs, but unfortunately, they were first generation iMacs.  So, I had a giant green iMac that was always crashing, and the only way you could reboot it was by unplugging it from the wall.  To this day, if I need to unplug my computer, I refer to it as a ‘Mac reboot’.  I know Apple has come a long way since then, but I’ve been scarred.  Plus, with the price of Mac computers, Apple is going to need to send me a Mac to try if they want me to change my mind.  This tech girl does not have money to burn.

So, where am I going with this?  Well, as I watched the Oscars on Sunday night, I saw the first iPad commercials.  Just watching it made me want to run out and be first in line for the latest Apple gadget.  I started thinking, what other company produces commercials that instills that NEED in consumers?  I’ve had that need reaction from pizza commercials or some yummy dessert, but not for an actual usable item.  I have to say that Apple does a better job with promoting itself than any other company.  I still love the ‘I’m a PC, and I’m a Mac’ commercials, and I’m actually a PC.  Plus, I have that “1, 2, 3, 4″ song floating in my head from one of their iPod campaigns.  Apple has found a way to instill that aura of superiority over all with their ad campaigns.  So, I am throwing out the question to all, is there anyone else out there that can take their title as King of Promotion?

I don’t think anyone can top Apple right now in the tech industry. Palm has tried and failed horribly. I also like the HTC marketing campaigns, but they are still not as mainstream as Apple’s commercials. I am really hoping that Microsoft will finally step up their game with Windows Phone 7 Series (and hopefully ditch that name) and find a halfway decent marketing firm.
