QOTD: How Large is Too Large for a Program & Is There a Light in Size Alternative to GoodSync?

QOTD:  JAMM Reader Question #1 – How Large is Too Large for a Program & Is There A Light in Size Alternative to GoodSync?

Today’s Question of the Day comes from reader David, and is actually kind of a two part one.  He’s been cleaning and run across a quite large program on his computer.  Read on:

“I was uninstalling unneeded software from my PC in an effort to find more space—I’m running out.  During that process I discovered GoodSync taking up a whopping 22,800 MB.  Isn’t that outrageous?  Do I seriously need a program of that bulk, no matter what it claims to do (that’s more than Photoshop or Microsoft Office).  I only got Goodsync to handle RoboForm.  Please tell me there is s sane alternative.”

So there you have it fellow JAMM readers.  Do you have a solution for David?  Hit the comments below and let him know!

I use sugarsync to synchronize the directories that contain my roboform data. seems to work just fine…

Where are you getting this number? From Add/Remove programs perhaps?

If so, Add/Remove programs gives an inaccurate number since it counts ALL syncs you ever made.

(Please excuse comment duplication-I entered wrong email address previously).

Whoa! That’s exactly where I’m getting that figure. I’ve never seen a program do that. Please explain further (and how do I know how much real real estate it does require?)

Do a search in Windows for _gsdata_ folders (they are invisible) and let me know what you find :-)

I couldn’t find the _gsdata_ file—it must truly be hidden and I don’t have time for a treasure hunt. I’m just trying to figure out the true value (and resource appetite) of GoodSynch. I’ll buy the dang upgrade if its what I need to keep Roboform current on my phone, but I have a duel problem right now: I’ve got a ton of site passwords to keep track of and need access to on the road AND I need to put my PC on a diet; I need to stop collecting programs I don’t really need. And the first ones to go are the ones that are resource hogs. It’s my fault that I’ve collected all this “stuff” but until I can afford the next Twin-turbo-12 cylinder quad cam 800 horsepower next gen PC, I can only go by what I’ve learned in the past: check the numbers. I even thinned out a boatload of old passwords in Roboform that are no longer applicable but I’ve hit some usage limit with GS, so I want to understand a few things more clearly before I willy-nilly buy yet another upgrade and just add to my bloat habit.
