Question Of The Day: What is the best program you have ever used, on any platform?
Simple, I don’t even have to think about this one. Merlin, made by Neuon, which ran on the EPOC 32 operating system. For those of you that don’t know what EPOC is, it is simply the best, most robust operating system for mobiles of all time and also the precursor to the current Symbian operating systems. It was developed and used by Psion. By robust, I mean truly threaded multi-tasking (this doesn’t exist in mobile OS’ today… you can’t open more than one instance of a program on Windows Mobile, etc). By robust, I mean only ONE soft reset of the my device in over one calendar year, and this was necessitated by installing an incompatible third party program.
Merlin, customizable, collapsible task manager extraordinaire truly highlighted the multi-tasking capabilities of the operating system by providing user defined toolbars for any program of your choosing. Users could have a system toolbar that provided shortcuts to applications, folders and documents. The battery and free memory could be monitored easily. Another toolbar could be defined and become visible when entering a specific program. For example, the controls and options might become more text editing centered, with specific scripts and caps lock indicators included when launching the word processing application.
Truly customizable. Truly diverse. Nothing like it available on any current platform, that I’ve seen. If there is, LET ME KNOW! I’m getting all nostalgic just seeing screenshots on the web…
So, what is the best program you have ever used, and why? Hit the comments below to share your program with us!
By the way, I included the following links in case anyone wants a brief history lesson on EPOC and Psion:

Back in December, we posted about the new ZAGGsparq by ZAGG.
The product is a portable battery backup & charger which offers extra juice to your hungry (and empty) devices; up to 4 iPhone charges, according to the specs.
It turned out that some of the ZAGGsparq units have suffered quality control issue with a component purchased from a third-party manufacturer and the problem did not show up during internal tests because the specific components were not defective.
ZAGG, through our comment area, let us know that they are aware of the problem and they offer a free replacement of defective unit:
Thank you to all posters who alerted ZAGG to the charging malfunction with some of our ZAGGsparq Portable Battery Backup & Chargers. We have traced the problem to a quality control issue with a component that we purchased from a third-party manufacturer. The problem did not show up on our internal quality assurance tests because the specific components we were testing were not defective. The issue emerged only when we began shipping the finished products.
This problem poses no safety hazard. Both the ZAGGsparq and your charging devices are completely safe. At ZAGG, we want to ensure that your ZAGGsparq delivers the high quality performance you have come to expect from all ZAGG products.
Therefore, if you have experienced problems with your ZAGGsparq, we will replace it free of charge with our new and improved model that will be available in late March. The new model, the ZAGGsparq 2.0™, will solve the charging issue. Just let us know if you have had a problem.
To receive a replacement ZAGGsparq 2.0 at no cost, customers simply need to mail back their original ZAGGsparq unit. Customers will receive a prepaid shipping label and envelope to return their original unit back to ZAGG for recycling and to qualify for a free ZAGGsparq 2.0.
Please contact us to confirm your mailing address and participate in our Free Replacement Program. You may call us at 1-800-700-ZAGG (M-F, 9am – 5pm, MT), or email us by visiting ZAGG.com/contact.
Thanks ZAGG for the chance to change a defective ZAGGsparq 1.0 with the new ZAGGsparq 2.0.
Only thing to do is to wait until late March.

Question of the Day: Was there really anything wrong with the Palm OS?
Let’s see, tens of thousands of apps, a stable operating system (minus a few mis-steps with NVFS) and near perfect hardware integration. Those are / were some of the characteristics of the Palm OS that made it a work horse. Yet, for these and countless other strengths of the operating system that brought mobile computing into social consciousness, it received countless hard knocks and criticisms from, well, just about everyone. The funny thing about the Palm OS is, that in my opinion, one of the major players now-a-days borrows several of its concepts, a few being no multi-tasking and a centralized home as the interface to the UI, consisting of pages of icons lined up on a grid.
So, what do you think? Was the Palm OS as bad as some made it out to be, or are some people simply not happy with anything? Hit the comments below and let us know your thoughts!
