QOTD: What are YOUR Thoughts on Windows Phone 7 Series?

Question of the Day:  What are your thoughts on Windows Phone 7 Series?

Steve Ballmer and crew recently finished dropping the news at Mobile World Congress.  The rumors are true. Yep.  Windows Phone 7 Series is a whole new operating system.  Nothing has been mentioned of backwards compatibility for existing Windows Mobile applications, for tweaks, for anything.  Much of what 7 Series is bringing, in my opinion, is a real step backwards as there appears to be little opportunity for a user to fall in love with the operating system.  Falling in love comes with tweaks and customizations.  iPhone users *use* their device.  It’s functional.  Tweaking the OS is not possible without jailbreaking.  People who can tweak, who can customize, they become rabid promoters of their platform of choice.  Look at T-Mobile’s MyTouch campaign.  It revolves solely around user customization.  People who have an intimate relationship with their handheld have a direct say in what happens on their device.  They stipulate how it will work.  They manipulate it.  They become infatuated.  They customize.  I bend my Windows Mobile based Touch Pro, forcing it to perform what I want how I want.  Occasionally I break it, but not beyond repair.  Will this be possible with Window Phone 7 Series, or did Microsoft just take away the opportunity for love?

Let us know what you think, by hitting the comments below, as I dry my eyes.

After giving this some thought, I think the biggest difference Microsoft is facing is a drastic shift in the audience. When Windows Mobile was initially introduced, it was adopted primarily by techies, hardcore users and tweakers. Since then, Smartphones have become significantly more mainstream, and they are now facing an audience who far less technologically inclined than they previously catered to. I think Windows Phone 7 Series reflects this shift in the core audience.

So far, my thoughts on it are mostly positive, though I have seen precious little beyond the press conference this morning. I really like the multimedia components, which pretty well mirror the Zune HD interface. The hubs are interesting. Beyond that, there is still a lot left unsaid, so we’ll just have to wait and see how things like cloud syncing, multiple email accounts (or email in general) and apps will all work on this one.

Brian,

I am Eurpean and I don’t care about multimedia player, thus I really don’t know how the Zune UI is.
However, animations apart, interface seems cleanm and I like it.
I am sure media will not be a problem, as also my Treo 600 was excellent for my needs, and WP7S devices will have a much powerul processor.
Apps support still is not clear and I wonder what the native PIM suite and third party developers will be able to bring.

Maybe they want to copy-paste (they always do this) Apple’s iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad evolution and let this one develop in a similar manner.

In any case, having bought a new WM6.5 device last December, I don’t thnk I will buy any WP7S devices before 2012.
