Question of the Day: Why did you choose your current device?
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, we here at JAMM are going to be starting a new on-going series in which a question is going to be posted daily. The questions will mostly pertain to mobile technology and all different aspects, but may occassionally stray a bit off topic to coincide with relevant and current issues. We’ll always be sure to share our thoughts, but what we would really love is for you to use the comments feature to let us hear from you. We’re all part of a community and we want to get to know you better. We want JAMM to thrive as a haven for the techno-geeks in all of us, where are all united by our common interests. So without further delay, here’s JAMM’s very first question of the day:
Why did you choose your current device?
My current primary device is the HTC Touch Pro. It runs on the US Cellular network. There were several reasons why I went with this device. First, I love Windows Mobile. Yes, I really do. From there, my wife and I had been using AT&T’s network and were just plain unsatisfied with our reception. After making the case with my wife repeatedly that we would be better off on a different network, where we could actually use our phones reliably, we opted for US Cellular (day and night, guys). At the time, US Cellular only had two Windows Mobile offerings: the Touch Pro and the Touch (they know carry the Touch Pro 2). Of course, never having a VGA screen or large quantities of memory on my phones (I was previously using a HTC Hermes / AT&T 8525), it was lust at first daydream. I COULDN”T go to the Touch, without wifi, having only a QVGA screen and no physical keyboard. Just couldn’t… plus it didn’t hurt my sales pitch to my wife that I had recently sold some older gadgets to completely finance the transition.
So there you have it, my journey to the HTC Touch Pro. Go ahead, hit the comments below to let us know why you chose your current device!

I have refused to change my device in 5 years as I was a more than happy Palm OS user. However, a major problem (a jump into the toilet…) made my Centro unusable and I was forced to change.
I don’t like to be on contract, thus I was looking for an unlockd device.
I follow tech blogs and I don’t care the price of the device I buy if it’s good for me, thus I chose among the following:
* iPhone OS: iPhone 3GS
* Windows Mobile: HTC Touch HD2 and HTC Touch Pro2
* Android: Google Nexus One and Motorola Milestone (a.k.a. Droid)
* Symbian or Maemo: Nokia N97 or Nokia N900
* webOS: Palm Pre
* Blackberry: Bold 9700 (a.k.a. Bold2) and Storm 9520 (a.k.a. Storm2)
I can’t live without a physical keyboard, thus many of the above choices were easily ruled out (bye bye iPhone
).
Nokia offers many intriguing handests, but they suffer either slugginess or lack of software (at least the one I am looking for, i.e. advanced PIM).
Blackberrys are still a mistery for me and I don’t consider the Palm Pre and Android grown enough to satisfy me.
That’s why I was leaning towards an unlocked HTC Touch Pro2.
Fortunately, the reviews of the Pro2 are all very positive about the hardware (be it a branded or a no branded version), which shines for its completeness and versatility. Keyboard in particular is one of, if not the, best available on mobile devices nowadays. The camera does an average work but is good even in a macro-like usage scenario. The screen is a huge 3.6?, which is good, even if it is resistive. Finally the Microsoft platform has tons of apps, with many good low priced software’s and well reputed developers.
Thanks to XDA-developer forums the unpleasant bolts of WM can be ruled out and now I am the happy owner of a 1 month old HTC Touch Pro2, no regrets!!
I hope an HTC HD2 with keyboard will soon emerge

I am using the HTC Hero now. To be honest, though, I do not really have much of a reason. I really liked the Palm Pre, but Palm kept breaking it. Windows Mobile was not working well for me anymore, and I had heard a lot of good things about Android. So far, I am pretty happy with this decision…though who know whether I will stay with Android when the new phones come out later this year.

I have my very cute Palm Centro. First, I’m a Verizon girl. I have always had a positive experience with their customer service, plus all of my friends and family are on Verizon. So, I get away with a low minutes plan.
I have always been a fan of the Palm OS. Before my Centro, I had a TX and the LG Chocolate (flip) phone. I needed to converge because I was ALWAYS forgetting my TX. Very bad when you miss meetings…
On the horizon for me is most likely an Android phone. I’d like to get one with the new Snapdragon processor, so I’m just waiting my time. I don’t like WinMo, amd the webOS is kind of skinny in the app department. I completely admit I’d get an iPhone if it was an option, but I’m sure that will have to wait until LTE is the norm.

HTC HD2, Unlocked on Telstra, Hacked by XDA. 1Ghz snapdragon, 576 Mb Ram. WinMo 6.5.3.x. What can I say? Just fast, beautiful and that screen
Works with my old pre paid plan. Did I say fast

I am the guy that people always ask what phone I’m using…not because they don’t recognize them (well sometimes), but because I tend to change devices every month or so. So, I will stick to what I am carrying today
Primary SIM card: BlackBerry Bold 9700
I have only had the Bold 9700 for a few weeks. I chose it because I needed a device that would help me stay organized and connected…even when my mind wanted to check out for the day.
Second SIM card: Nokia N900
The N900 is what I wanted the Palm Pre to be, only geekier. The web browser is simply amazing plus it also runs Firefox. It actually comes with a Terminal icon to let me geek out on the command line. It is Linux in a box…although a box that I haven’t been able to use as my primary device because it is an Internet Tablet first and a phone second.
I am lucky enough to be able to double-fist phones…now if I can only find a career that values this obsession

Current device is Palm Treo Pro. First I needed a new carrier to get better coverage in my home. I had two choices of carriers that appeared to have the coverage. Then I looked at devices. My requirements were:
1. Had to work with ChaosHost ( http://www.chaoshost.com).
2. Ringer on/off switch.
3. Physical Keyboard.
4. Bluetooth.
5. Bonus items; work with Natara’s Bonsai and Daynotez.
Oh, and most important – it has to work well as a PHONE.
I’ve had the Treo Pro since December 1 and am pleased so far.
