More Deets on The Nook

Yesterday, I brought you word of Barnes and Nobles new ebook reader, the Nook. Today, bn.com President William J. Lynch sat down on a web-based conference call with select members of the media…including JAMM (thanks to our good friend, Judie, at Gear Diary for the hook up on this one.) Our very own Louis “Tekipaq” Leiberman listened in on the call, and took careful notes.
In addition to his own presentation about the Nook, Mr. Lynch also opened the forum to questions. Louis (and others who attended) reported that there were quite a few great questions (as well as some not-so-great questions). Here are a few of the highlights which Louis reported.
1.) Ability to share ebooks for two weeks with any user with a BN software wirelessly. After two weeks the ebook appears back in your library and is unavailable to the lendee.
2.) Unit will cost $259.00
3) No SDK Yet but most likely in future
4) Will be released end of November
5) No initial advertising on device, but advertising is coming.
6.) Two Screens….one for browsing, annotations and the other for reading ebooks.
7.) Standard USB connection to transfer onto the device. PDFs, ebooks, and pictures can be transferred.
8.) Browse and Shop in Color. The Instore special content will only be visible when connected to B&N wifi in the store.
9) Device has both wireless 3G and Wifi for connecting to the BN Store.
10.) There will be no discounting on price of the device.
11.) Touch Screen will be similar to the iPhone touch technology (Cool!)
12.) BN chose Android technology for this device and modified it per their requirements.
13.) The Ebook screen is crisp, clear and does not show glare.
14.) Fictionwise pdb format will also be supported.
15.) Size will be approximately that of a paperback book.
You can learn more about this fantastic looking new ebook reader (it has taken all of my willpower not to preorder it) at www.nook.com. Check it out, and then come back and let us know what you think. Will this one measure up to the Kindle? Or has the Kindle already pulled too far ahead for anyone to catch it? and what about Sony’s ebook reader? Where will that one fall? All these questions and many more remain to be answered soon.
