Latest News on Barnes & Noble’s New Reader

Lots of stories and rumors flying around about Barnes & Noble’s soon to be released e-reader.  First, the official news:  B&N has scheduled a ‘major event’ for October 20.  This has to be an announcement about their e-reader being produced by Plastic Logic.  I am totally excited to see what they have in-store.  What features are available, and what surprises are included to lure the public away from the Kindle?

Now time for the juicy little rumors.  A week ago Friday, an employee of B&N was video-taped saying that a new black & white e-reader will be available soon, and a color e-reader will be available in Spring 2010.  Plastic Login has now come out to deny that a color e-reader will be released next year.  They have stated that color is part of their plan, and they are excited to be working with B&N.  However, there is no color device at this time.  Plastic Logic stated that the earlier report was inaccurate, and from a misinformed individual.  I give the whole situation a ‘hmm…’.  The part about a new e-reader being available was correct, but that was not a hard thing to guess.  I would love to see a color e-reader.  I’m a comic books gal, and that would be so perfect for a reader application.  Overall, I say let’s wait until the big CES in January to find out about color.

There is also a report that the new e-reader will use the Android OS.  No telling what exactly the system will be used for, but this could open up the door for much more functionality to the e-reader.  Maybe you will be able to have full internet capability?  This could be the magically item B&N needs to beat the Kindle.
