Tomorrow is the big day, 9-9-09. The day the new iPods are unveiled (we hope) or maybe the apple iTablet will be announced. Or maybe Steve Jobs will finally unveil his plans to take over the world (which does beg the question: does that make Steve Wozniak Pinkie??)
As is usually the case, there have been a myriad of rumors and speculation floating around all day today. We don’t really have anything new to add, but before the big event, I thought we could recap everything we have heard today.
- Apple will unveil a $149 1st or 2nd generation iPod Touch to compete with the Zune HD (Geek)
- Both iPod Touch and Nanos will have a camera (Crunchgear)
- iPods with cameras will be delayed due to a shortage of CMOS components (Slashgear)
- The Beatles will appear in the iTunes store (Wired)
- Significant improvements to iTunes and the App Store (including a Cloud based component) (Wired, TechCrunch)
- There will be no Tablet announced by apple (Crunchgear)
- The iPod Classic may be discontinued (Crunchgear)
- Steve Jobs will appear as the surprise guest (Crunchgear, Wired)
Wow! That is a lot to digest, all out of one event. So, get your scorecards out and get ready. Remember, this is all just speculation, conjecture, and rumor. Until the event occurs tomorrow, we will not know for sure what may or may not be announced. So, keep track and pay attention to how accurate these Internet rumors turn out to be.
It looks like the new Android Mobile Phone from HTC will be highly customizable and is scheduled for release next month!
Users will be able to purchase unique covers to customize the design and look of their phones to suit their individual moods and tastes. I really like this idea, as personalizing mobile devices will be popular especially among the younger crowd; I’m really impressed with this new phone!
The Tattoo comes with some cool new features, which include a G-Sensor, Digital Compass and FM Radio, as well as a 3.5mm audio jack and GPS. The Tatto also boasts a 3.2 megapixel camera, as well as a micro SD slot and up to 390 minutes of talk-time.
I can’t wait to see one, however, it might not be for a few months in the US, as the HTC Tattoo will be launching first in Europe at the beginning of October.
Here is a link to the full specifications from HTC: <Specifications Link> and here is the official Press Release:

We cannot promise that you will see the world with JAMM, but you can at least tell the world about your favorite gadgets.

I just got done reading this article that Dan Cohen posted over at Gear Diary, and the similarities of my own mobile device journey are scary. Dan has been an admitted Apple fanboy and iPhone user. Though recently, he has been seeing more and more of the dark side of Apple’s bubble of control over their App Store and how they deal with developers.
Like Dan, I have been going through the same journey. Every pointless App Store rejection or app that Apple yanks from the App Store makes me less and less likely to ever buy an app from them again. I use a MacBook as my main computer, and I don’t think I could use anything else. But, I am far from an Apple fanboy…I use their products, but don’t drink the Kool-aid.
I have used all of the various iPhone models. I have used multiple Palm Pre’s. I have tried out the BlackBerry Bold and I have a BlackBerry Curve for software testing. I have a Nokia E71 that still gets some airtime when I need a nearly-indestructible phone. I have various Windows Mobile phones that get less and less air time as I lose almost all interest in what Microsoft is doing in the mobile space these days.
So, where has my journey ended? Well, I will talk more about that later, but it has paused on a device that I was completely excited about when it was announced, yet when the reviews started pouring in, I quickly lost all interest. That is, until last week…
Any guesses as to what my latest phone is?

Sprint seems to hope so. The folks over at Precentral.net got ahold of some new documents showing upcoming prices for Sprint phones. On this list is the Palm Pre for $150. They have the HTC Hero, one of the more attractive Android devices, priced at $179. If you are on Sprint, this is starting to look like a decent deal. Of course, when the price drop goes live, you are still probably better off shopping at BestBuy or Radio The Shack since, unlike Sprint, they will give you the rebate without you having to actually mail it off.
I just returned my third Palm Pre over the weekend, and I have to say that I am not sure it is worth it quite yet. I love…absolutely LOVE the potential of webOS. Too bad the Pre is plagued by sub-par hardware. I really want Palm to succeed, but at the same time I think I would rather see them just license webOS to someone like HTC that knows how to make some quality hardware. Then maybe they can focus more on optimizing the OS to get rid of the lag and some of the other quirks.
So, in the days when you can buy a $99 iPhone 3G, what do you think about Palm selling the Pre for $249? Remember, you only get it for $149 if you are one of those people that follows through with a mail-in rebate.
[via Precentral.net]
UDPATE: Well it looks like the majority of the US are not eligible for this deal yet. PreCentral has issued an update to this issue. What it boils down to is that the only markets that are eligible for the $249 – $100 mail-in rebate are the IPCS markets. To read more about this update, check out the PreCentral article here.
