Random Thoughts: “Phoney” Friends

It has become clear to me that I hoard mobile technology. I love cases, cables, memory cards. I love cell phones. I “collect” them. That’s what I tell myself, anyways… This hoarding has caused me to amass a collection of items that I am certain will never again be used by me. Thus, the long process of deciding what must go and what gets to stay… who was a good enough friend, a confidant, a companion that was there when my wife was stuck in the dressing room, was there when the doctor was running behind, was there when no one else would possibly be up? It has become clear that my gadgets are more to me than mobile technology. They take on the role of a friend, a constant friend that is always strapped to your hip, sitting firm in it’s custom made case, just waiting for you to interact with it. I know that as I start this process of parting with some of my no longer used mobile tech, I will be better off in the long run. It’s hard though…
How about you? Do your phones and gadgets take on a role of a friend in your life? … a companion that is always there? Let us know in the comments section below!

Friends? Yea, sort of. I’ve had numerous PDA-type devices (PocketMail, anyone?), Media Players, phones, PCs, etc.
It seems that technology moves so fast these days, it’s hard not to want the latest and the greatest, leaving your previous devices gathering dust or confined to their box. It’s hard to let go of something that you “shared your life with”, and portable devices seem to be rather personal.
I have managed to hang on to a RAZR V3xx for longer than my 2-year contract simply because it serves me well as a phone, allowing the Zunes to play my music. It has the best radio section in it than any other phone I have owned, the reception is far better than my work-issued HTC Hermes. I had a scare a couple of weeks ago when the RAZR started acting strange, but it turned out to be AT&T’s wierdness causing the problems. Funny though, I probably wouldn’t have the RAZR if my Nokia 6102 hadn’t bit the dust. I miss the FM Radio it had.
I currently have 10 or so Media Player devices, only 2 of which I use regularly. I’ve discarded another 2 or 3. Each one served well until I needed more capacity, or more desirable features. If/when a ZuneHD 64GB comes out, I’ll have a tough decision to make. If they were to somehow jump to 128GB, it wouldn’t be so tough.
I feel a little guilty leaving my HP dv9000 at home while carrying my Acer Aspire One to work. The HP gets its revenge when I try to do something on the Acer that causes it to stumble where the HP would breeze right through it. But the Acer is much easier on the shoulder.
