New Sony E-reader Details & A Plea

As specs often do, they were leaked for Sony’s two new e-readers via a product post from retailer J&R.  Of course, once the mistake was realized, they were quickly removed.  No one wants Sony mad at you.  However, we still have the info on the newest members of the e-reader family.  First, the PRS-300, or E-Jr as I call it, has a 5 inch screen with 800 x 600 resolution and 512MB of memory.  Features include:  PC and Mac support, USB 2.0 connectivity, and a battery with the capacity for 7500 page turns.  E-Jr can be yours for $199.

PRS-600 has a 6 inch touchscreen and is only 0.4 inches thick.  It has the same resolution, memory and battery life as its little brother, E-Jr.  However, this e-reader is packed with many more features:  virtual keyboard, doodle capacity, built-in English e-dictionary, audio outputs, and SD/MC slots.  Of course, it supports both Mac and PC, and is priced at $299.  Honestly, big brother here is definitely worth the extra money.  The touchscreen and expansion slots sell the extra cash for me.  All the other features are just a bonus.

Now comes the plea.  I love to read, so this comes from someone who is very interested in e-readers.  Actually, I just won a Sony e-reader this morning via my favorite book site, Bitten By Books, so I am part of the family.  Sony and Borders PLEASE work together to create a fabulous e-reader experience.  The one knock I hear over and over again is that Sony’s device is great, but the book selection is awful.  This is including all the Google ebooks.  Let’s think about this.  Sony has an e-reader, and Borders has lots of books.  It makes logical sense.  The fact that these two haven’t already teamed up just blows my mind.  I even see Sony e-readers inside Borders.  Its like a kid with a big pile of Oreos sitting next to a kid with a big jug of milk.  Both could be doing so much better if they worked together.  Here’s the plan:  CEOs of Sony and Borders have a meeting.  I will be more than happy to be there to help things along.  Once the agreement is made, one of the wireless companies will need to be involved, maybe Verizon or Sprint, to help with wireless capabilities.  Sony will need to add internet and wireless hardware and software to their e-readers.  Borders will need to prepare their site for wireless downloads via the e-reader.  Throw all of that together, and you have a real competitor for the Kindle.  I am making it my mission to get this done.  If only I could find the cell number of the Sony CEO…I know its around here somewhere…
