Why I Love My Smartphone AND My MP3 Player

I came across this post earlier over at Mobility Site.  Apparently, Twitter user AdamZea posted the following on his Twitter feed:

Julie over at MobilitySite fired off, what I thought was, a very well reasoned response.  Julie admits to carrying both a smartphone and a Microsoft Zune.  And she offers three reasons for doing so:

  • battery life
  • syncing
  • media management

I thought Julie’s post was dead on.  Other than the iPhone (which began its life as a media player and evolved into a phone) smartphones simply do not offer the same media experience as a dedicated media player.  In addition to the items Julie mentioned, I would also add quality of playback, the lack of memory in many phones, and the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack in many phones.

For me, convergence of devices has not worked out well.  And I plan to continue carrying both a smartphone and media player, as well as a Kindle 2 and netbook.  Each of which serves a different purpose in my arsenal of gadgets.  How about you?  What do you carry?  And has the promise of one device to tame them all worked out for you?

I’m all for carrying around a main “compromise” gadget that does a little of everything (my smartphone) and then taking out a specialized gadget for pictures (canon camera) or better web surfing (macbook) — but for the everyday it’s all about the iPhone.

In the end, you have to decide, what you need to carry to meet the needs of what you do. Observing and denigrating others choices in that realm, probably means you are happy with mediocre on all levels, rather than having a preference for a specialised optimised experience, for everything you want from your mobile experience. If anyone thinks a Windows Mobile device can deliver, a connoisseur experience on all levels… Scracthing my head ;)

I run an iPod a Fuze and a Kindle.

I wish that my Fuze would pop into the iPod dock in my car – as it carries enough music for short trips around town.

Longer trips, though, I’d still carry an iPod. I would be VERY interested in the new Zune HD but, I run a MacMini for all my media so…MicroSoft, go hire some kids from Cupertino to write some code.

I carry an 80gb iPod classic, as well as my laptop and my Moto Q9H. In a month or so, I’ll probably pick up the new iPhone and still carry my iPod around with me. The reason for me is that I have a very eclectic collection of music. And I don’t want to have to pick and choose which songs/artists I want on a lower storage capacity device. So even with 16gb on the new iPhone, I’ll still carry my iPod classic with my entire music collection.

Here the same, still use both.for me there are two major problems about use only the phone: I very often run out of battery on phone and it’s too bulky and not easy to handle compared to an ipod or a regular MP3 player.

I carry my Samsung Omnia II, which has 10 GB,an amazing screen,a media player and W-HD sound with 3.5mm headphone jack.
And I don’t need to carry anything else.
