S stands for speed, by the way. Why not Video, though? It does that. It does a lot of things, actually [including]:
- faster loading of apps and web pages – I’d love to know the tech specs, though
- Voice control – dial, play music
- Record video – VGA resolution, 30 fps
- Built-in Compass app
- 3.0 MP auto-focus camera with tap to focus (WOOHOO!)
- improved battery life (so they say)
- supports tethering – although no AT&T support for this yet
- more accessibility – zoom in on text, have it read aloud when selected
- $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB – first launch including Canada/US on June 19, second launch for other countries in August
It’s strange that I see so many bloggers on Giz and Wired talking about how this isn’t a very big update. Maybe it’s the fact that I haven’t used 3.0 at all yet, but the 3GS certainly feels like a whopping big upgrade to me. I’m definitely going to snap this phone up, although I don’t think I’m necessarily game for standing in line. We’ll see.
As for that old iPhone 3G from – you know, I forget when – that’s now available for $99 with a contract.
[Big kudos to the Giz for the great coverage and live pics]
There was a fair bit of hubbub generated today, over the release of the newest version of Opera Mobile. Apparently Opera’s press release site put a teaser title up with no details. Even though we’ve seen previews of what the latest iteration of Opera Mobile would look like, it’s been impossible to try it till, not very long ago. Here’s what the video preview looks like…
We’ve seen Opera Mini and Skyfire that use off device server tech to speed up and reduce the data traffic to your mobile device, and thus offer you a better mobile browsing experience. From what I have read and understand, Opera mobile 9.7 is a melding of this sort of off device tech. A bit like what Google Gears does for your computer.
Do you love gadgets and mobile technology? Are you the kind of person who always helps their friends figure out their new gadget? Do you have lots of opinions about mobile technology? Well, you might be just what we need.
Just Another Mobile Monday is looking for a few good men (and women) to join the team. As a team member, you will have access to all the latest news, some of the latest gadgets, and a heck of a lot of software…sometimes before anyone else.
What’s in it for you? Well…
- The Hours: Are terrible. Basically, we plan to suck up your free time.
- The Pay: Also stinks.
- The Benefits: Let’s just move on…
The good news is that you will be joining a fantastic, diverse, and collaborative writing team, with a wealth of interest and knowledge. And we think one of you might have just the talent and skills we are looking for to continue to expand the team. Oh…and occasionally, you can get some really cool free stuff that you may even get to keep!
So, if you have a love for mobile technology, and would like to share your knowledge and opinions, drop us a line at admin [at] justanothermobilemonday.com (replace the at with an @.)
Well, if you made it this far, then you must be interested. So, go ahead and drop us an email today. Uncle JAMM Needs YOU!

We are getting very close to unveiling the new JAMM theme. Over the weekend and into this week, we have been doing quite a bit of testing and preparation. We have also been getting some different features in place so they will be ready to go when launch day arrives.
While most of these features will look great with the new theme, they may not all look perfect with the current theme. So, please excuse any wonkiness you may experience while we put the finishing touches on the new JAMM theme.
Raise your hand if your phone is funny-shaped. (You can put it down now — no one can see you.) If you belong to the Funny-Shaped Phone Club, chances are you have shared my pain — it’s darned near impossible to find a decent case for your phone. My particular headaches are a sleek silhouette and a slide-out keyboard. I’ve got to give credit for ingenuity to some of the marvels of engineering out there that attempt to do the job of covering it, but effectiveness is harder to find.
I was just about ready to resign myself to carrying my Touch Pro around wrapped in a handkerchief. But before I threw in the towel, I ran across one of Proporta’s newer cases, the Maya. High tech it is not; it’s a pouch. No flaps, no cutouts, no fasteners. I’d always been leery of pouch cases because most of them seemed to be one size fits all (translation: it’ll fit everything badly) and I didn’t like the idea of fumbling with it to answer a call. However, the way my case hunt had been going, the simplicity of a pouch was appealing.
