Missing Sync Beta For the Palm Pre!

sync-palm-pre-mac One of the greatest variations from the norm with the Pre and WebOS, is the idea that you are not traditionally tying your phone to a particular computer for Data Sync. The Pre breaks out of the Box in that way, not committing to any OS for sync. It relies on what ever Cloud services you want to tie it to, to maintain your personal data.  This great article from Ars Technica will explain it way better than I ever could.

One thing that becomes evident though, especially after the woes over Toodle-Do’s Toodle-Down, that Doug posted, are you completely happy to commit your Data to the Cloud?

NewsBreak Lite – Free RSS Reader

newsbreakmatches

Everybody needs a break to keep up with the news and with Ilium, RSS feeds are a snap. I’ve been using Ilium’s NewsBreak since version 1 back when I won a copy here on JAMM several years back – certainly this is one of my favorite apps of all time. Now, you can get a healthy taste of NewsBreak with NewsBreak Lite.

You can save keywords that NewsBreak Lite will use to quickly find stories that
interest you, use alerts to stay up to date on information that’s most important
to you, and use keyword icons to spot headlines that matter to you. NewsBreak
Lite makes it simple to schedule downloads of podcasts so you can enjoy them
whenever and wherever you want. You can even share headlines with your friends
and family directly from NewsBreak Lite.

The only drawback of the lite version is that it is limited to 5 feeds….not bad for starters…but for those who want more beef, go get the full version at the JAMM Store for a mere $19.95 and you can save an additional 20% off by using the coupon JAMM-ESSENTIAL. So, what are you waiting for? Go check out this essential app and see how easy it is to get that NewsBreak of the day!

Evernote Lands On The Palm Pre

pre_4

Great news for Palm Pre owners!  According to jkOnTheRun the Palm Pre is getting a new addition: Evernote.  I have been using Evernote on my Windows Mobile device for several months and find it to be a must have program.  Evernote is currently available for Windows, Mac, the Web, iPhone, Windows Mobile…and now the Palm Pre.

So what does that mean to you?  Evernote is always within reach and notes added via any of these versions are always synchronized with the Evernote server, so they are instantly available to you from virtually anywhere.

For those of you who may not be familiar with Evernote yet, it  is one of the most versatile programs I have used on any platform, allowing you to create notes via text input on your device, as well as printed and handwritten text within snapshots and images.  In either case, if you can upload it, then Evernote will recognize it!  And, all of the text in your note is recognized and indexed on the Evernote server allowing you to search for any text in your notes, even if it is in a photo.

Evernote has truly helped me organize my busy days on numerous occassions.  How many times have you been out somewhere and needed to jot something down, but did not have a pen or paper? No problem, you can create a text note or use the camera on your device to take a photo of what you need to remember and it will be synchronized to the Evernote server for future reference.

You can sign up for a FREE account or you can choose a Premium account (details of the accounts can be found on Evernote’s website). For me this application is one of the tools in my mobile Swiss Army knife that I take with me everywhere.

I just checked out the Evernote site and the download for the Palm Pre is sitting there waiting for you to come and get it.

A New Member of the JAMM Family

CIMG0024

I am very excited to have the opportunity to introduce a new member of the extended JAMM family.  His name is Caleb, and he was literally born yesterday (June 11).  Caleb is the newborn son of our multi-talented writer extraordinaire, Brett Quam, and his lovely wife Ashley.

According to Brett, Caleb was born at 7:15 pm, and weighed in at 7 pounds, 8 ounces, and 20 inches exactly.  Brett also reports that the family has no concerns about Caleb’s lungs, which seemed to be working just fine all night.

Now, I know this is no Jay Leno introducing the 63 kids born to his staff during the 17 years he was on the air.  But I will say that Caleb is the first baby born to a JAMM team member (other than me) since I have been here.  Hopefully, the first of many!

CONGRATULATIONS TO BRETT, ASHLEY, CALEB, AND THE ENTIRE QUAM FAMILY.

Billshrink highlights the real cost of your fancy pants smartphone

This is all carrier-specific information and only based on US carriers, but it’s a great way to look at how the dollars add up.

What really struck me here is that the Pre just looks so tiny in terms of storage size. 8GB isn’t all that much any more, especially when you add the idea of apps to a device. Is that non-expandability worth the $600 savings compared to a G1 and its SD card slot? Is it worth the $1200 savings (based on iPhone unlimited plan – you can choose cheaper ones, though) when compared to the iPhone?
