Does Palm Pre Cut Apple To the Core?

Check out the latest salvo fired by Sprint in the Palm Pre vs. iPhone battle. I have to admit, I think this is a clever ad, especially the Palm Pre leaning against a apple core. Now, I have no idea whether any of the claims in this ad are accurate or even effective (though the math on that $1200 over two years seems pretty close). But it is nice to see that both Sprint and Palm are not dead yet.

Whether or not the PalmPre is seriously damaging Apple remains in question. However my guess is, if Apple thought its new releases would cause migration from Sprint, that likely is not happening. Rather we wxpect that there is greater migration from ATT to Spring because of the Palm Pre because of the Pre’s new utility, and Sprint’s favorable pricing. And for those that say Sprint’s network is inferior, that notion is false. $50-$75 ADDED network charges per month for &33 is serious motivation to give Spring a try. Incidentially, when I was in line for my PalmPre, there were 5 switching from ATT/Apple to the Pre foe the reasons above and the mechanical key board. We also very muck like the Touchstone charging base which eliminates the fumbling with wires/plugs, and wearing out of dirty charger base units that become faulty with hundreds of plugging-unplugging. Sorry for the Typos in my comments above..
The “system” would not permit editing.
&33 = ATT
Spring = Sprint
Wxpect = expect
Foe = for…
In times like these, folks are being more mindfull of cost. This weekend we went to Costco and bought an ACER notebook, instead of a HP or SONY for $1000 more. Turns out, the ACER is a very fine unit #4810, and does operate for 7-8 hours on a charge… Well watch out Apple and ATT, as folks take a much harderlook at pricing plans, for which Sprint wins, with excellent bandwidth and coverage. Note there are “holes” in all providers’ network coverages… JimW

Yeah Jim…. keep deluding yourself, as always, you get what you pay for. You’re stuck with a pretty good OS on some very crappy hardware. How much does that cost? Me, I gladly pay the additional $20.00 per month for my iPhone because I have a very, very dependable device on a very dependale network, no, not the best network, but good enough., and where it lacks Apple fills in with its marvelous device. Oh, BTW, your typos speak volumes about the ease of use of those lil tiny tiny itsy bitsy cheap keys. Sent from my iPhone

Dave, I think there is no need to become mean spirited. The issue of which device is “better” is always going to be personal. For me, having used devices in almost every smartphone operating system (other than Android) I think WebOS is really just phenomonal. It is an intuitive interface which makes it easy for me to access the data and information I need. It is not perfect, but for me it is just incredible. I woudl even consider it to be a significant improvement over the iPhone interface due to the sliding panels in the interface. Not sure whether you have tried the Palm Pre or what you are basing your statements on, but it is far more than a prettu good OS.
The Pre’s hardware is very well designed. It has some flaws, like the keyboard slider and battery life. But overall, it is just an absolutely factastic device.
Like I said, I do not know whether you used the Pre or not before you made this comment, but I would strongly encourage you (and any other readers) not to just arbitrarily refer to “a pretty good OS” and “very crappy hardware” based on what you have read on other sites or seen on TV. In the short time I have had the Pre, it has far exceeded even my expectations.

Dave and dgoldring,
i completely agree, the Pre and the webOS is Amazing! If you have never used this device and try to make slanderous claims against it,…I have no words.. Just like the Apple fanboys, hypnotized. The ‘crappy’ hardware is just about as powerful as the iPhone’s actually. The OS has been cleverly designed, but yes, there are some holes, but nothing to detract from the overall experience of the phone. Phones are built with some users in mind, and it’s not for everyone. I didn’t like the lack of a physical keyboard on the iPhone, and that’s been my biggest gripe.
On the other hand, webOS has features that the iPhone CANNOT do, such as multitasking and synergy…and a mphysical keyboard, albeit small maybe for som, but fine with me. And let me tell all of you readers… I shall Never again use a device that doesn’t have multitasking, it’s just Perfect. I feel like I’m on a mini laptop at times, the way I switch from browsing the web, to sending a text, to checking email, and everything else seamlessly. You just cannot beat that. People are worrying about apps, but they are coming, you just have to have a little patience. This is a brand new device and mobile OS, so give them a little leniency. Although, I would have preferred for them to have something better at launch, but the apps they have now are quite useful. There are plenty of homebrew apps in the wild as well.
I can say that at Apple’s iPhone launch, the comparison to this phone is not even close. They launched the Pre in between, say OS 2.0 and OS 3.0, and it’s slowly creeping up to the 3.0 level, but we just cant compare tho. They each have distinctive features the other doesn’t have (iPhone: video and video editing on the phone; Pre: multitasking and Synergy) so you can’t compare OS to OS on levels like that. But I can say that Sprint is renowned as the best data provider of all the major carriers, and to have a phone that’s centered around data, that is very important. AT&T doesn’t even offer MMS, but OS 3.0 included it tho.. what a waste. And to my knowledge, AT&T sucks for many people (that I know), so having the iPhone is kinda like having a Ferrari without any gas in the tank, lol
But I can say that I’m glad that I skipped the iPhone and made this choice. I’m not so giggily about games and random apps, but I do prefer the ease of use with multitasking and synergy to gather all my data and contacts from the cloud, and access to my email and the web without problems. Pre even does daily backups for certain data on your phone, and after doing a partial erase for something, I rebooted the phone, reconfigured my Palm Profile, and BAM! All of my contacts, data, and apps were all back without a hiccup. Beat that, that comes standard. Apple would prolly charge and arm and Both legs for such convenience.
