Quick Look: SBSH Go News Touch. Has SBSH Found The Confluence of Form And Function?

ScreenShot27

Ever since the advent of the iTunes App Store last year, Windows Mobile development has really slowed down.  A lot of my favorite developers stopped (temporarily, I hope) developing for Windows Mobile in order to start transferring their apps and games for the iPhone.  Now, while there is nothing wrong with that, it has really left something of a barren wasteland in the once fertile land of Windows Mobile development.

Fortunately, a few stalwarts have stayed the course, releasing new Windows Mobile programs.  Lately, we have looked at Resco Contacts Manager, Spb Mobile Shell 3, and now the latest new program for Windows Mobile, SBSH Go News Touch, which is the first foray by SBSH into the world of RSS readers.

    Long live the software keyboard!

    photo

You can hardly fault people for enjoying their RIM Buh-Berries and their full QWERTY thumbpads, but I really love my iPhone’s software keyboard. However, it wasn’t any Blackberry that got me thinking about writing this piece, but rather all those video demos of the Palm Pre – especially from the Palm presenters themselves. One of the things they seem to love mentioning is that it’s a real, genuine keyboard, tempered under the hot sun on the Isle of K’Bord. Feature sets aside, RIM Blackberries and Palm Treos rank among the smartphone all-stars because of all of the thought that has gone into designing them. That got me thinking about how my love for software keyboards developed, the hardware that supports them, and why I think they beat hardware solutions on handsets every damn time.

Link Love: Boy Genius Report hands-on with the Pre

    pre32

The Boy Genius Report seems to be able to get its hands on pretty much any handset, and it seems the crew there have even managed to get a hold of a Pre before it launches on Sprint this June. Not too much feedback for now since they’ve only just received the review unit, but they said they’d be staying up all night to get the review out as soon as possible. Initial thoughts are that the screen is fantastic, but the QWERTY keyboard could be a little worrisome in terms of size. Well, we’ll all see what people think in just under two weeks, but I can’t wait until the full BGR review comes out.

Check out their site for a few more pics – and stay tuned for that review!

Now This Is Mobile Technology! part 27

falcon1961Some of the best gadgets are those that merge the old with the new. Retro styling is still fashionable, My last car was a 1961 Ford Falcon station wagon. The restoration trend, to preserve these great old stylish designs, sometime calls for innovations that meld older tech with new. Thus a marriage of mobile devices, like a retro car stereo, and an iPod, is something that crosses many Tech barriers.
